Lucas Norat

Lucas Norat was born on June 26, 1997, in Brazil. As a child, he led a largely sedentary lifestyle that kept him away from the athletic pursuits many of his peers embraced — until age 11, when a deep fascination with mixed martial arts drew him to Muay Thai, marking his first step into combat sports.

At 13, bullying at school pushed Norat toward a more decisive change. He turned to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, drawn by the art's reputation as an equalizer between smaller and larger opponents. The transition came naturally: his father already trained at a local gym run by Joelson Souza, and under coach Joe Souza, Norat earned his yellow belt while building the technical and personal foundation that would shape everything ahead. What began as self-defense quickly became a calling.

As Norat's ambitions shifted from self-defense toward a professional career, he transitioned to the competition-oriented Gracie Barra Jacarepaguá academy in Rio de Janeiro. There, coach Villeem Coelho became the central figure in his development, introducing a structured approach that proved immediately transformative.

Under Coelho's direction, Norat earned his blue and purple belts while building a strong record on the juvenile circuit. In 2014, he won both the IBJJF South American Championship Juvenile and the IBJJF Brazilian Nationals Juvenile, establishing himself as one of Brazil's most promising young grapplers. His purple belt years deepened that résumé further, highlighted by a runner-up finish at the IBJJF American Nationals in 2018 and a bronze at the IBJJF Brazilian Nationals in 2016.

Norat's trajectory also made him one of the first prominent athletes produced by Gracie Barra's Ambassadors Program — a scouting and development initiative within the organization's global network that provides fully paid scholarships to elite-level prospects. His selection reflected both the quality of his early results and the potential those around him had long recognized.

The encounter that would define the next chapter of Norat's career took place in 2016 during an IBJJF training camp at Gracie Barra's headquarters in Irvine, California. It was there that Norat crossed paths with Flávio Almeida — a meeting that would reshape his professional trajectory. Following the camp, Almeida extended a full scholarship offer for Norat to train at Gracie Barra Arizona, which Norat accepted.

The move set an entirely new standard for his preparation. Almeida's structured program accelerated Norat's development at every level, and the results reflected that environment: Norat earned his brown belt under Almeida and, in 2020, validated his progress by winning the IBJJF American Nationals in both the Gi and No-Gi formats at the brown belt level — back-to-back titles that signaled his clear readiness for the black belt division.

In January 2021, Flávio Almeida promoted Norat to black belt in a formal ceremony, bringing to completion a journey that had begun years earlier with a teenager searching for protection on the streets of Rio de Janeiro.

Norat competes in the Super-Pesado division (100.50 kg / 222.0 lbs) as a representative of Gracie Barra on the international IBJJF circuit. His transition to the black belt division was immediate and assured. Shortly after his promotion in early 2021, he captured gold at both the 2021 IBJJF Phoenix Open and the 2021 IBJJF Charleston Open, confirming that his brown belt dominance was no anomaly. He also reached the final of the IBJJF American Nationals that same year, earning a silver medal in a performance that cemented his standing among the division's top competitors.

Norat's growth at the black belt level has continued in the years since. At the 2023 Pan Jiu-Jitsu IBJJF Championship, he secured a bronze medal, affirming his ability to perform against the deepest fields the sport has to offer. His career arc — from a bullied teenager in Rio de Janeiro to a scholarship athlete competing at the highest levels of the IBJJF circuit — stands as a testament to the personal and professional transformation that jiu-jitsu made possible.
