Lucas Lisboa

Lucas Lisboa Alves was born on August 22, 1995, in Vitória, the capital city of the Brazilian state of Espírito Santo. As a teenager, he channeled his competitive drive into basketball, competing at a serious level before tragedy reshaped the course of his life. The passing of his mother plunged Lisboa into a deep depression — a struggle his family sought to address through psychiatric and psychological support, though without meaningful results.

The turning point came when Lisboa discovered a jiu-jitsu academy near his school. Stepping onto the mats for the first time provided the sense of purpose and healing that had eluded him elsewhere. His first coach, Isaque Pereira, played a pivotal role in that transformation, providing the guidance that ignited a lasting passion for the sport and laid the technical foundation upon which Lisboa would build his career.

While pursuing a degree in Political Science at the Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo, Lisboa balanced academic life with an increasingly serious commitment to competition, testing himself on the local circuit throughout his colored belt years. With only one year remaining before completing his degree, he made the defining decision to set his academic pursuits aside and relocate to São Paulo — driven by the ambition to train under Cícero Costha, one of the most celebrated instructors in the BJJ world.

Representing Cícero Costha, Lisboa entered the IBJJF global competition circuit, traveling internationally and measuring himself against the sport's best. His progression under Costha's tutelage proved fruitful, earning both his brown and black belts from the renowned instructor. His black belt promotion took place on October 9, 2020 — a milestone that marked the culmination of a journey that had begun on the mats of Espírito Santo.

Throughout his years based in São Paulo, Lisboa maintained a strong connection to his home state, regularly returning to Espírito Santo to train. During these visits, he became a student of Gilvan Junior at a Checkmat affiliate in the Jardim Camburi neighborhood. Junior's coaching proved far more than supplementary — Lisboa credits him as equally important to his technical development as the guidance received from Costha.

This dual mentorship reflects one of Lisboa's defining characteristics as a competitor: a willingness to seek high-level instruction from multiple sources and integrate diverse perspectives into a cohesive game. The combined influence of Costha and Junior shaped him into a well-rounded athlete capable of performing on the sport's biggest stages.

A pivotal career shift came through a conversation with André Porfirio, a former teammate from the Cícero Costha academy. Porfirio introduced Lisboa to the opportunities available at Fight Sports in Miami, Florida, leading to a meeting with team leader Roberto Abreu — widely known as Cyborg — who welcomed Lisboa into the Fight Sports fold by the end of 2021.

His time with Fight Sports coincided with a productive stretch on the IBJJF Open circuit in 2022, during which Lisboa claimed gold at tournaments in Dallas, Atlanta, Chicago, and New Orleans, demonstrating both his consistency and competitive sharpness at the regional level. Despite the success and opportunities the Miami-based team offered, Lisboa ultimately chose to leave Fight Sports and return to representation under Cícero Costha. The arc of his career — from Espírito Santo to São Paulo, to Miami and back — reflects a pattern in which strong personal relationships and mentorship have consistently guided his most consequential decisions.
