Clock Choke

Submission Gi only

Quick Reference

Key principles

  • · A deep cross-grip on the far lapel, fed under the chin and across the throat, is the foundation of the choke.
  • · The choking pressure comes from walking your body in an arc (like a clock hand) away from the opponent, driving your chest weight down onto their shoulder line.
  • · The near-side hand grips the pants or belt at the hip to anchor the opponent and prevent them from rolling away.
  • · Keeping your hips low and sprawled prevents the opponent from sitting through or re-guarding.
  • · If they attempt to roll toward you, follow the roll and transition to mount while maintaining the collar grip to finish.

Execution

  1. 1 From turtle top, reach under the opponent's chin with your far-side hand and secure a deep four-finger grip on the far lapel, knuckles against the neck.
  2. 2 With your near-side hand, grip their belt or pants at the hip to pin them in place and block escape.
  3. 3 Sprawl your hips low, placing chest pressure on their upper back and near-side shoulder.
  4. 4 Walk your legs in an arc away from the opponent (toward their feet-side), keeping your chest heavy and letting the rotation tighten the lapel across the throat.
  5. 5 Continue the arc until the choke closes; if needed, drop your near-side shoulder to the mat to maximize pressure.

Common mistakes

  • × Gripping the lapel too shallow or on top of the chin rather than under it, resulting in a jaw crush instead of a proper strangle.
  • × Rising up on the knees instead of sprawling low, which relieves chest pressure and allows the opponent to sit through or roll to escape.
  • × Walking the arc too fast without maintaining the hip anchor grip, letting the opponent spin with you and alleviate choking tension.
