In 1974, Tavares stepped onto the mats at Academia Serrana in Teresópolis, beginning his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training under instructors Geni Rebello and Elias Martins. The mountain academy provided him with a rigorous technical and competitive foundation, and as he advanced through the early belt ranks, both his aptitude and his drive to pursue the art at the highest level became evident.

Upon reaching purple belt, Tavares returned to Rio de Janeiro to seek elite training and sharper competitive preparation. That move brought him under the tutelage of the legendary Carlson Gracie, one of the most influential figures in the history of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Training within the Carlson Gracie Team during its dominant run through the 1980s and into the 1990s, Tavares forged the aggressive, pressure-based game that would define his competitive identity. In 1995, Carlson Gracie awarded him both his brown and black belts, formally inducting him into one of the sport's most storied lineages.

That year, he captured the Brazilian National Championship in the Master division and swept the Pan American Championship, claiming gold in both the Master weight category and the absolute — a performance that showcased the full range of his technical and physical capabilities. He followed with a Pan American silver medal in 2002 in the Master division, adding further depth to an already formidable résumé.

A Relentless Competitor Across Formats

After relocating to the United States, Tavares extended his competitive footprint into MMA, appearing at World Extreme Fighting 12 in Ohio. His willingness to test himself across formats reflected a competitive temperament that refused to be confined to a single arena.

Renato Tavares' path to the United States began in 2002, when a student named Jeff Davis invited him to Kentucky to teach. Following the death of his father, Tavares returned to Brazil before making his way back to the United States in 2003.

Joining American Top Team

That return proved to be a pivotal turn in his career. In 2003, Tavares joined American Top Team (ATT) alongside prominent figures including Ricardo Liborio, Marcelo, and Conan Silveira. The affiliation with ATT — one of the premier combat sports organizations in the United States — sharpened his competitive profile while providing a world-class training environment. Within ATT, Tavares occupied a dual role: competing at an elite level while serving as an ambassador for the Carlson Gracie Team tradition inside one of American MMA and grappling's most respected institutions.

Beyond his competition record and his affiliation with American Top Team, Renato Tavares built a lasting institutional legacy through the founding of the Renato Tavares Association.
