Leonardo Lara

Born on January 24, 1997, in Brazil, Leonardo Lara discovered Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at age 10 through a community social project led by the Almeida brothers — an initiative that would fundamentally alter the course of his life. His earliest training came under Diogo Almeida, and it was within that environment that his natural ability first began to surface.

As Lara's talent grew increasingly evident, Caio Almeida stepped in to take over his development, offering him a scholarship in recognition of his clear potential. Lara's commitment ran deep enough that he moved in with Caio Almeida's family to sustain the training intensity required for elite competition — a degree of sacrifice rare even among serious athletes. That foundation of dedication and personal investment set the stage for what would become a distinguished competitive career.

In June 2018, Caio Almeida awarded Lara his black belt, a milestone that formally recognized years of growth, discipline, and achievement on the mats.

Brown Belt Dominance

Leonardo Lara's ascent through the colored belt divisions produced one of the most decorated brown belt campaigns in recent IBJJF and UAEJJF competition history. In 2017, he captured gold at the 2017 IBJJF São Paulo Open, the 2017 IBJJF São Paulo BJJ Pro, and the 2017 UAEJJF Grand Slam Rio de Janeiro, signaling his arrival as one of Brazil's most dangerous young competitors.

The 2018 brown belt season marked the peak of that chapter. Lara claimed gold at the 2018 IBJJF World Championship and the 2018 IBJJF Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championship — two of the sport's most prestigious titles — and added further victories at the 2018 UAEJJF Abu Dhabi Pro and the 2018 IBJJF South American Championship. By the time his black belt promotion arrived in June 2018, his results had already made the case for it.

Black Belt Transition and Continued Growth

Lara transitioned into black belt competition without missing a beat. Within the same calendar year as his promotion, he earned gold at both the 2018 IBJJF São Paulo Open and the 2018 ACBJJ World Championship — a clear statement of readiness for the step up. In 2019, he added the 2019 CBJJE World Championship to his record, reinforcing his standing among the sport's elite.

Lara continues to compete at the international level across multiple weight divisions. His overall grappling record — 75 wins and 41 losses, with a notable proportion of submission finishes — reflects both the volume and the quality of his competitive output.
