Italo Lins

Born on October 21, 1988, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Italo Silva Lins de Albuquerque grew up immersed in a city with a rich martial arts culture. Before finding his calling on the BJJ mats, he spent several years training Capoeira, the Afro-Brazilian art that fuses dance, acrobatics, and combat. That background sharpened his body awareness and coordination, but it was Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu that ultimately redirected the course of his life.

At the age of 12, Lins accepted an invitation from friends already training BJJ and stepped onto the mats for the first time under Carlos Santana — a coach whose influence on the sport extended far beyond any single student. Santana is also credited with introducing Bruno Malfacine, one of the most decorated lightweight competitors in BJJ history, to the art. That lineage underscores the exceptional caliber of the environment where Lins began his journey. Santana's academy operated as an affiliate of GF Team, embedding Lins within the Grappling Fight Team ecosystem from the very start.

Under Carlos Santana's guidance, Italo Lins demonstrated the consistency and commitment required to advance steadily through the belt ranks — from white belt all the way to brown belt within the GF Team affiliate structure. The technical foundation Santana instilled during those formative years proved durable, equipping Lins for the demands of high-level competition that would define his career.

Upon reaching brown belt, Lins made a pivotal decision to relocate to the main GF Team headquarters and train directly under Julio Cesar Pereira, the organization's founder and head instructor. The move elevated both the intensity of his training and the quality of his sparring partners. In 2010, Julio Cesar Pereira awarded Lins his black belt, formally recognizing his technical maturity and competitive readiness. Lins quickly established himself as one of the team's primary competitors, joining a generation of fighters that includes Vinicius Marinho, Igor Silva, Rodolfo Vieira, and Jake Mackenzie — a cohort widely regarded as one of the most talented to emerge from a single Brazilian team.

Competing at Peso Pena (70kg/154lbs), Italo Lins built one of the most geographically diverse competition records in his weight class, accumulating titles across multiple continents over more than a decade of active competition.

Early Black Belt Success

Lins wasted no time establishing himself at the elite level. In 2010, the same year he received his black belt, he claimed gold at the CBJJO World Cup, the IBJJF Rio Open, the North-Northeast Interstate Championship, and the Mercosul Cup — an immediate statement of competitive intent.

International Expansion

The following years saw Lins broaden his competitive footprint with purpose. In 2011, he captured back-to-back IBJJF Open titles at the Las Vegas and New York events, while also adding the NAGA Championship to his record. He returned to New York in 2012 for a second IBJJF Open victory, alongside the CBJJO Pan Championship and the CBJJ Brazilian Team Nationals. His 2013 campaign added the IBJJF Dallas Open, followed by the AJP World Pro Trials and the IBJJF London Open NoGi in 2014, then the IBJJF Rome Open and BJJFP Philippines Open in 2015 — a stretch that illustrated his ability to perform across different rulesets and time zones.

World-Level Recognition

Lins further distinguished his résumé by competing in markets many peers bypassed. The BJJFP Pan Asian Championship title in 2016 and the IBJJF Manila Open in 2017 reflected a willingness to travel and compete globally. On the prestigious AJP circuit, he claimed gold at the AJP Abu Dhabi Grand Slam London in 2017 — a result that confirmed his standing among the world's best featherweights. The CBJJD World Championship title in 2016 added a world-level gold medal to a collection already spanning multiple organizations. Additional IBJJF Open victories in London (2018) and Chicago (2019) demonstrated that his competitive edge remained sharp deep into his career, while a silver at the 2015 IBJJF European Open NoGi and a bronze at the 2016 IBJJF European Open reflected the fierce competition he consistently faced at the highest level.

As Italo Lins transitioned into the Masters division, he carried the same uncompromising standards that had defined his open division career. In 2019, he claimed gold at the IBJJF Pan Championship Masters, one of the most competitive Masters tournaments on the annual calendar. The following year, he reached the pinnacle of Masters competition by winning the IBJJF Masters World Championship — the most prestigious title available in the bracket — cementing his legacy as an elite-level competitor across multiple eras. That same year, he also earned a podium finish at the AJP Grand Slam Miami, demonstrating continued engagement with international competition even as 2020 presented unique logistical challenges.
