Julio Cesar Pereira's roots in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu trace back to the Gama Filho Jiu-Jitsu academy, the program associated with Gama Filho University in Brazil. That institutional environment shaped his foundational approach to the art and provided the platform from which he would eventually build one of the sport's most recognizable competitive organizations.

In late 2007, Pereira made a decisive move — breaking away from the university structure to establish an independent team identity entirely his own. He named the new organization Grappling Fight Team, widely known as GF Team, with a clear vision driving the effort: to construct a competition-focused program capable of standing among the international elite while carrying a strong, unified institutional identity.

As the head instructor and guiding force behind GF Team, Julio Cesar Pereira cultivated a team culture defined by discipline, technical rigor, and competitive ambition. His leadership produced consistent results at the sport's highest levels, establishing a growing presence at IBJJF World Championship events throughout the following decade.

The 2010 IBJJF World Championships offered an early indicator of the team's rising trajectory, with Pereira's athletes earning Silver and Bronze medals in competition. That momentum continued to build, culminating in a landmark performance at the 2016 IBJJF World Jiu-Jitsu Championship, where GF Team claimed 35 podium spots — a record-breaking result that announced the organization as one of the most formidable competitive teams in the world. It is this consistent production of champions, forged within the demanding yet principled environment Pereira built, that earned him the nickname "Samurai Master" among practitioners and peers throughout the BJJ community.

In 2016, after 31 years as a black belt, Julio Cesar Pereira received his coral belt — the 7th degree — one of the highest honors the sport bestows. Reserved for those who have demonstrated not only technical mastery but sustained, decades-long contributions as teachers, leaders, and stewards of the art, the coral belt carries profound significance within the BJJ hierarchy.

The timing of the promotion, coinciding with GF Team's historic performance at the 2016 IBJJF World Jiu-Jitsu Championship, gave the moment added weight.
