Jake Mackenzie

Jacob "Jake" Mackenzie grew up in Truro, Nova Scotia, Canada, where his introduction to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu came at age 14 through his father's encouragement to develop practical self-defense skills. The timing proved fortuitous: Chuck Sproule had just opened a BJJ gym near the Mackenzie family home, and that mat space quickly became Jake's second home.

Mackenzie's earliest development was shaped by coaches of genuine world-class caliber. His first instructor, Márcio Feitosa — a three-time World Champion — left a lasting technical impression during a brief but formative five-month stint. Márcio Canário then stepped in, guiding Mackenzie through the following two years of foundational training. That these coaches of such pedigree operated in an unlikely corner of Atlantic Canada speaks to the circumstances that helped establish the technical rigor that would later define Mackenzie's competitive identity.

As Mackenzie's competitive ambitions grew, he traveled to Brazil with increasing regularity, drawn by the depth and intensity of the grappling culture there. It was during these extended stays that he confronted a critical weakness in his game: the Half Guard. Rather than avoid the position, he made a deliberate and methodical decision to transform it into his greatest strength.

Taking advantage of a favorable Dollar-to-Real exchange rate, Mackenzie invested in a concentrated four-month series of one-on-one private lessons with several of Brazil's foremost half guard specialists. The results were profound. He developed an exceptionally refined approach to the Deep Half Guard that became the defining signature of his competitive career, earning him recognition across the international grappling circuit as one of the position's most prolific and technically sophisticated practitioners. What had once been an Achilles heel became, through disciplined study and immersion in Brazil's competitive ecosystem, his most dangerous weapon.

Building the Partnership with Cyborg

Mackenzie's path to the black belt ran through his friendship and training partnership with Roberto Abreu, widely known as "Cyborg." The two crossed paths numerous times on the competition circuit and developed a genuine rapport. In 2007, while Mackenzie held a purple belt, Roberto Abreu invited him to join his team upon opening a gym in Florida. Mackenzie accepted without hesitation, relocating to train almost exclusively under Abreu for several years.

Promotion and the Move to GFTeam

The depth of that partnership bore competitive fruit before the black belt was even awarded. In 2010, while still a brown belt, Mackenzie claimed gold at the IBJJF European Open — a result that signaled he was ready for the sport's highest rank. On June 12, 2010, Roberto Abreu formally promoted Mackenzie to black belt, recognizing both his technical mastery and his competitive achievements.

Following his promotion, Mackenzie made another pivotal move: he relocated to Brazil and joined GFTeam, cementing a commitment to competing on Brazilian soil that had been building for years. The decision was as much personal as professional — Mackenzie had already begun establishing deep roots in the country — and it positioned him within one of Brazil's most competitive and well-resourced training environments.

Building a Life and Career in Brazil

Few foreign-born athletes have embedded themselves as thoroughly in the Brazilian BJJ competitive landscape as Jake Mackenzie. Despite being Canadian by birth, he built his black belt career representing Brazil — a reflection of the life he constructed there in the early 2010s, including establishing a family and making the country his permanent competitive base. His rapid acquisition of Portuguese accelerated his integration, allowing him to communicate fluently within the technical and social environments of Brazilian BJJ.

A Record of Elite Titles

Over the course of his black belt career, Mackenzie accumulated titles across a wide range of prestigious circuits. He captured gold at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals No-Gi in both 2013 and 2014, claimed the IBJJF São Paulo Open on three occasions (2013, 2015, and 2017), and won the IBJJF South American Championship in 2017. His reach extended well beyond South America: the 2019 IBJJF Asian Open added another continental title to his record, while a silver medal at the AJP Abu Dhabi World Pro in 2018 underscored his competitiveness at the sport's most elite open-bracket events.

Masters Competition and Career Longevity

Mackenzie's career longevity stands as one of its most remarkable qualities. As he transitioned into Masters competition, he continued to perform at the highest levels — winning the IBJJF World Masters Championship in 2018 in the Masters 1 division, one of the most competitive masters categories in the sport. Additional Masters titles followed at the AJP Brazilian National Pro in 2020 and the IBJJF American Nationals in 2022, demonstrating a sustained competitive edge that few athletes maintain across decades. Throughout it all, the Deep Half Guard remained both his calling card and his most reliable path to victory — a testament to the transformative investment he made in Brazil long before he ever called it home.
