David Lemes

Born on December 3, 1982, in São José dos Campos, Brazil, David Juliano Lemes emerged as one of the most recognized featherweight competitors in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He came to the sport at 17 — a relatively late entry by elite standards — yet his progression was swift and deliberate. Under the instruction of Erivaldo Junior at Equipe Liga Jiu Jitsu, Lemes constructed a technical foundation that would carry him to international podiums. By the end of 2008, Erivaldo Junior awarded him his black belt, closing a formative chapter of his jiu-jitsu education in his home city.

A pivotal factor in Lemes's development was his close partnership with Claudio Calasans, with whom he trained extensively at Equipe Liga Jiu Jitsu. Their shared competitive drive accelerated Lemes's evolution from regional prospect to internationally recognized contender — a trajectory confirmed by podium finishes at major events including the South American Championships and the European Open.

The core of Lemes's competitive career took shape within Equipe Liga Jiu Jitsu, where he and Claudio Calasans developed in parallel under Erivaldo Junior's guidance. When Calasans transitioned to Atos Jiu Jitsu — based in Rio Claro — Lemes began traveling to the Atos academy ahead of major tournaments, gaining access to one of the sport's most demanding preparation environments.

The results validated the arrangement. Lemes won gold at the South American Championships twice, in 2009 and 2011, and claimed the European Open title twice — first in 2008 at brown belt, then again in 2012 at black belt. He also captured the Pan American title in 2009 through the CBJJE and earned a silver medal at the CBJJE World Championship in 2007 as a brown belt. Rooted in Liga Jiu Jitsu's technical instruction and sharpened by Atos's elite competition culture, Lemes stands as a uniquely forged presence within the featherweight division.

Lemes built his competitive identity around two complementary guard systems: Guarda Sentada (Seated Guard) and Meia-Aranha (Half-Spider Guard). Both emphasize distance management and dynamic transitions — qualities that translate directly to the agility and timing demands of featherweight competition.

The Seated Guard generates constant offensive pressure, creating sweep setups and takedown entries that force opponents into reactive, off-balance positions. The Half-Spider Guard — a hybrid blending spider guard mechanics with half guard structure — excels at disrupting posture and opening lanes to sweeps and submissions. Together, these systems reflect an aggressive, offensive guard philosophy consistent with the high-level technical standards cultivated within the Atos training environment and embodied throughout Lemes's career.

Lemes's engagement with jiu-jitsu extends well beyond competition. He holds a degree in Physical Education from the University of Vale do Paraíba and earned a Master's degree from Gama Filho University — a sustained academic investment in sport science and human performance that complements his practical experience and informs the principled approach he brings to athlete development.

Drawing on both his competitive résumé and academic background, Lemes founded DJ Team, where he coaches and develops the next generation of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners. Through this platform, he transmits the technical and competitive standards refined across years of training at Liga Jiu Jitsu and Atos JJ. The integration of elite competition experience with formal academic training positions Lemes as a well-rounded authority in both the coaching and educational dimensions of the sport.
