Julia Boscher

Born on November 20, 1995, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Julia Boscher emerged as a fiercely competitive young athlete with a talent for multiple sports. Handball quickly rose to the top of her pursuits, and her performance on the court drew the attention of Fluminense, one of Brazil's premier handball clubs. The opportunity, however, came with a logistical cost — the demanding daily commute to train with the club proved unsustainable for her family, and her handball career at that level was cut short before it could fully take shape.

Rather than stepping back from athletics, Boscher redirected her competitive energy. At 13, she began practicing muay Thai, a discipline that would ultimately serve as the gateway to her future in jiu-jitsu. Within her muay Thai training circle, she encountered an enthusiastic advocate for grappling — a training partner who championed jiu-jitsu as the superior combat style. Intrigued, Boscher approached her parents about joining a BJJ academy. Her father agreed, though with one condition: she would train exclusively in a women-only class.

In her early teens, Julia Boscher joined Soul Fighters and began training under Alexandre Salgado, a coach who would become one of the most formative figures in her development. Salgado's approach was competition-focused from day one — Boscher made her tournament debut with just one month of training experience. Her natural aptitude for grappling was immediately apparent, and she earned her blue belt in only three months, a remarkably rapid progression that signaled the depth of her potential.

When Salgado relocated to Abu Dhabi, Leandro Escobar assumed primary instructional responsibility. Despite the distance, Salgado maintained a close mentorship bond with his former student, making a point to attend gradings and key career milestones — a reflection of the mutual respect that had defined their coach-athlete relationship from the start.

As Boscher advanced to brown belt, Hugo Marques became an increasingly central figure in her training. In July 2019, both Hugo Marques and Alexandre Salgado jointly promoted her to black belt — a ceremony that honored the collective role her mentors played in shaping her journey from a curious teenager to an elite competitor.

Julia Boscher built one of the most decorated colored-belt records of her generation, competing across the sport's most prestigious circuits — the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) and the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation (UAEJJF). Competing in the Peso Médio division (69 kg / 152.5 lbs), she assembled an extraordinary collection of titles spanning multiple belt levels and tournament formats.

Purple Belt Breakthrough

2017 marked a breakout year at purple belt. Boscher captured gold at the IBJJF World Championship, claimed the IBJJF Pan Championship title, and extended her international reach by winning the UAEJJF Abu Dhabi World Pro — a combination of results that announced her as a standout talent on the global stage. Her dominance crossed formats as well, with the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals No-Gi title added that same year, building on a title she had already claimed in 2016.

Brown Belt Dominance

Transitioning to brown belt, Boscher maintained her winning trajectory. She secured back-to-back CBJJ Brazilian Nationals No-Gi titles in 2017 and 2018, then claimed the IBJJF World No-Gi Championship crown in 2018. The 2019 season brought further recognition — a second IBJJF Pan Championship gold and the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals Absolute title, her first major black belt result, served as a fitting capstone to an exceptional colored-belt career.

Beyond the competition floor, Julia Boscher established herself as one of jiu-jitsu's most prominent voices for female representation and gender equity. Throughout her career, she consistently challenged the male-dominated discourse that has historically shaped grappling culture, making women's visibility and inclusion a central part of her identity as an athlete.

Boscher's advocacy was rooted in action rather than rhetoric. She viewed her competitive success as direct evidence that women could build meaningful, high-level careers in jiu-jitsu, pursuing her titles with the dual purpose of personal achievement and broader inspiration. By excelling at the sport's most prestigious events, she demonstrated to other women that the competitive arena was a space open to them as well.

Her commitment extended beyond personal example. Boscher actively pushed for the growth of women's divisions and their visibility within the sport's organizational structures, positioning herself as a significant figure not only within Soul Fighters but across the wider BJJ community — a competitor whose legacy is defined as much by what she stood for as by the titles she earned.
