Gabriel Vella de Freitas was born on April 30, 1981, in São Paulo, Brazil, into a family where athletic excellence was a way of life. His father, Luiz Otávio Batista de Freitas, was a South American Swimming Champion, and that competitive drive flowed naturally to Gabriel and his brother Thiago. The two grew up immersed in sport, cycling through Water Polo, Team Handball, Football (soccer), Karate, and Judo before either had encountered Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

Gabriel's introduction to BJJ came at age 14, through a combination of circumstance and instinct. While training Judo, his brother Thiago had already begun training at Ryan Gracie Academy in São Paulo — notably the Gracie family's first academy established in that state. Gabriel visited to watch his brother on the mat, and Ryan Gracie himself spotted the young visitor standing at the edge and invited him to train. Gabriel accepted, and the session left a permanent impression.

Both brothers committed to the sport with immediate intensity, adopting a twice-daily training schedule that quickly set them apart. By 1997, the Vella brothers were dismantling opponents throughout the lower belt divisions with an aggressive, submission-oriented style that drew early media attention. At the time, São Paulo produced very few competitors capable of challenging the elite coming out of Rio de Janeiro — fighters like Godoi and Patino "Macaco" were rare exceptions. The Vella brothers represented something new: a generation of São Paulo fighters built to compete at the highest level.

Gabriel Vella's ascent through the belt ranks was defined by consistent dominance in major competition. In 1998, competing at the purple belt level, he captured both the Pan American Championship and the Brazilian National Championship — titles that announced him as one of the most dangerous young competitors in the country. He carried that momentum into 2000, winning the Pan American Championship again, this time in the brown belt division.

After sweeping the major titles across the lower belt divisions, Gabriel Vella received his black belt directly from Ryan Gracie in 2000. The promotion recognized not only his technical development but his comprehensive performance across years of high-level competition. His elevation to black belt also carried symbolic weight for São Paulo BJJ — Vella stood at the forefront of a new generation from that state, one equipped to challenge the long-standing dominance of Rio de Janeiro on the national and international stage.

Vella's transition to black belt competition produced immediate results at the sport's highest level. In 2002, he won the IBJJF World Championship competing under Gracie Barra — a landmark title that confirmed his standing among the elite black belts of his generation and marked one of the signature achievements of his early career.

Following his 2002 World title, Vella chose to test his jiu-jitsu in a broader competitive arena by turning to Mixed Martial Arts. On January 26, 2003, he made his MMA debut against Yuki Kondo, a decorated veteran widely regarded as the king of Pancrase. The fight ended in a draw — a creditable result against such a seasoned opponent and a clear demonstration that Vella's grappling foundation translated effectively beyond sport BJJ. The MMA crossover reflected his competitive ambition and willingness to seek out the highest level of challenge available, though it also marked the beginning of a period of reduced activity in mainstream sport jiu-jitsu competition.

In the years following his MMA stint, Vella found it increasingly difficult to maintain competitive drive at the Ryan Gracie Academy. The environment that had shaped him no longer provided the professional infrastructure he needed to perform at his best. Faced with stagnation, he made a decisive — and, at the time, controversial — choice: he joined Alliance, the São Paulo-based rival academy that had built one of the most professionally organized competitive programs in Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

The move drew criticism from within the BJJ community, given the historical rivalry between the two camps. But the results vindicated the decision. Alliance offered a level of coaching depth, training structure, and competitive preparation that reignited Vella's ambition. He re-emerged as a frontline competitor, and in 2008 he won the IBJJF No-Gi World Championship — a prestigious title that added a no-gi dimension to his already substantial résumé. His 2004 Pan American Championship title was another product of this renewed competitive focus, and during the same resurgent stretch he reached the finals of multiple other major tournaments, consistently performing among the best in the world.

Vella's time at Alliance illustrates a recurring theme in his career: a willingness to make pragmatic, sometimes unpopular decisions in the service of competitive growth. Institutional loyalty, for Vella, was always secondary to the pursuit of excellence on the mat.

The full measure of Gabriel Vella's competitive longevity came into focus in 2009, when he captured a second IBJJF World Championship title — more than seven years after his first. Winning a World title across two separate decades, under different competitive circumstances and with different team affiliations, placed him in rare company among the competitors of his generation. The 2009 title was not the product of a single hot streak but of sustained dedication across a career full of transitions and challenges.

The surrounding years were equally productive. Vella won the Pan American Championship in 2010 and the World Pro Cup in 2010, making that stretch one of the most decorated of his career. The combination of gi and no-gi titles, Pan American and World-level victories, and success across multiple affiliations painted the picture of a complete and enduring competitor.

Despite his successes at Alliance, philosophical and organizational differences with the team's management eventually led to his departure. Vella returned to the Ryan Gracie Academy, by then operating under the leadership of Celso Vinicius, who had taken over following the death of Ryan Gracie. The return brought meaningful symmetry to his career — the teenager whom Ryan Gracie had called off the sideline and onto the mat had become a two-time World Champion, closing the circle by returning to the place where it all began.

Gabriel Vella's career stands as one of the most complete produced by São Paulo in BJJ history: spanning multiple decades, multiple team affiliations, and titles across gi and no-gi formats at the sport's highest levels.
