His early BJJ development unfolded under Master Deoclecio Paulo, who guided him through the blue and purple belt ranks. Seeking a higher level of training, Paulista relocated to Florianopolis and joined Gracie Floripa under Alexandre Souza. The partnership proved transformative — on December 6, 2006, Alexandre de Souza awarded Paulista his black belt, marking the beginning of his most accomplished competitive years.

In April 2010, at what should have been a peak period in his professional life, Bruno Paulista's world changed dramatically. A severe car accident left him with the loss of many basic motor capabilities, transforming a thriving competitor and academy owner into someone facing an uncertain future. In the years that followed, he underwent four surgeries and committed to an intensive rehabilitation process that tested every reserve of mental and physical endurance he possessed.
