Baseball Bat Choke

Submission Gi only

Quick Reference

Key principles

  • · The two hands grip the collar in opposite directions—one palm-up and one palm-down—creating a scissoring action across the neck.
  • · The choke tightens primarily through chest pressure and sprawling your weight forward, not by squeezing with the arms alone.
  • · Setting both grips before the opponent recognizes the threat is critical; once grips are locked, transition speed finishes the choke.
  • · Anticipate the opponent turning away to escape pressure—this rotation actually tightens the choke if you follow with your body toward north-south.
  • · Keep elbows tight to your own body to prevent the opponent from stripping grips or creating frames.

Execution

  1. 1 From your top position, insert your first hand deep into the opponent's far-side collar with a palm-up grip, knuckles against the neck.
  2. 2 Place your second hand on the near side of the collar with a palm-down grip, positioning it close to the first hand so both fists are adjacent on the collar like gripping a bat.
  3. 3 Lower your chest onto the opponent's face/neck area while beginning to slide or sprawl toward north-south, driving your weight forward.
  4. 4 As the opponent turns into you or away, follow the rotation, squeeze your elbows together, and drop your chest to complete the strangle.

Common mistakes

  • × Setting grips too far apart on the collar, which reduces the scissoring pressure and makes the choke loose and ineffective.
  • × Trying to finish the choke from the original top position without transitioning toward north-south, resulting in insufficient tightening across the neck.
  • × Telegraphing the second grip by hesitating, which gives the opponent time to defend by tucking the chin or stripping the first hand.
