Roberto Tozi

Roberto Tozi was born in Campinas, in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, and found his path into martial arts through his brother, whose Judo training served as an early source of inspiration. Committing to the sport with remarkable intensity, Tozi attended classes as frequently as possible and advanced through the ranks at an accelerated pace. His dedication produced tangible results: a Judo black belt, back-to-back São Paulo State Judo Championship titles, and a 3rd place finish at the World Judo Open held in the United States.

Despite his success on the feet, Tozi initially held little appreciation for ground work—known in Judo as newaza. It was at the insistence of his Judo coach that he began developing his ground game, leading him to enroll in a Jiu-Jitsu club. What started as a reluctant supplement to Judo training gradually transformed into a deep fascination. The submission-oriented nature of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu captivated Tozi in a way Judo's newaza never had, and he progressively shifted the majority of his mat time toward BJJ.

Building the Foundation in Campinas

Tozi's formal BJJ education began in his hometown of Campinas under Carlos Libre, who guided him from his earliest days on the mats through his brown belt. Seeking to elevate his game further, Tozi relocated to São Paulo to train at the prominent Godoi/Macaco gym, one of the leading training centers in Brazilian BJJ at the time. After three years of dedicated training at the brown belt level under Roberto Godoi, Tozi received his black belt promotion.

Loyalty, Division, and Competitive Resolution

When Roberto Godoi and Patino Macaco parted ways and established separate academies, Tozi faced a pivotal decision. He chose to remain with Roberto Godoi, whom he regarded as his true instructor and mentor. The split eventually produced direct competitive confrontation, as Tozi went on to defeat Macaco Patino on two separate occasions following their separation.

Championship Record

On the competition circuit, Tozi established himself as one of the premier heavyweights in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Competing in the Pesado (Heavyweight) division at 93kg (207lbs), he captured five Brazilian National Championship titles across 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, and 2007. His success extended internationally, with Pan American Championship gold in 2000, 2001, 2003, and again in 2011 in the master division. A World Silver Medal performance further affirmed his standing among the elite competitors of his era.

Beyond his competitive titles, Roberto Tozi's most enduring contribution to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu lies in his guard passing. He built a formidable reputation within the BJJ community for his exceptional ability to navigate and defeat the guard, and at the core of that reputation sits a specific technique he developed and refined throughout his competitive career. That technique—widely referred to as the Tozi Guard-Pass, and also known as the São Paulo Pass or Paulista Pass—bears his name as a direct acknowledgment of his role in codifying and popularizing the position.

The Tozi Guard-Pass became a significant reference point in guard passing curricula taught by coaches and practitioners around the world. Its integration into the broader technical vocabulary of BJJ represents the kind of lasting legacy that few competitors achieve. Championship titles define an athlete's competitive career, but the widespread adoption of a technique named in one's honor speaks to a deeper and more permanent impact on the art. In Tozi's case, this contribution places him among the select group of practitioners who have meaningfully shaped how BJJ is understood and taught.

In 2006, Roberto Tozi extended his competitive pursuits beyond the grappling mats and into Mixed Martial Arts, following a path taken by many elite BJJ competitors of that era who sought to test their skills in a broader combat sports arena. His MMA debut ended in a loss by decision, offering an early lesson in the distinct demands of the cage compared to the competition mat. Tozi continued to compete in MMA on several additional occasions, remaining active in the sport through 2008.

His MMA career was relatively brief when measured against the depth and longevity of his BJJ record, but it reflected the spirit of a martial artist willing to challenge himself across disciplines.
