Antonio Peinado

Antonio Peinado was born on March 20, 1982, in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and found his way to the martial arts through Judo at a young age. His formative years on the mat were shaped by master Marcelo Carvalho Rodrigues, a figure Peinado regards not merely as a coach but as a brother. Under Rodrigues' guidance, he earned a brown belt in Judo — a grappling foundation that would later inform his approach to competition at the highest levels of the sport.

In May 2002, a friend's invitation redirected the course of his athletic life. Peinado walked into Ronaldo Yashimiro's academy in Vila Mariana, Sao Paulo — an affiliate of Alliance — and his natural ability was apparent from the first training sessions. Facing financial constraints that might have cut his journey short, Yashimiro recognized the young athlete's potential and offered him the opportunity to train at no cost. That decision proved immediately justified: just two months into his BJJ training, Peinado claimed gold at the Sao Paulo State Open as a white belt.

His development accelerated without pause. Three months later, Yashimiro promoted Peinado to blue belt to allow him to compete at the Brazilian National Teams Championship — a moment Peinado identifies as the turning point that crystallized his ambition to pursue a full career as a Jiu-Jitsu competitor.

Approximately one and a half years after the Brazilian National Teams Championship, Antonio Peinado received an invitation that would define his competitive identity: to train at Alliance headquarters in Sao Paulo under the direct supervision of Fabio Gurgel, widely regarded as one of the most accomplished coaches in the sport's history. Gurgel awarded Peinado both his purple and brown belts, guiding him through the most technically demanding phase of a competitor's development.

Purple and Brown Belt Dominance

At purple belt, Peinado's competitive credentials were already substantial, capturing the CBJJ Brazilian National Championship in 2007. His brown belt campaign proved even more commanding. Competing primarily in the Pesado (Heavyweight) division, he delivered one of the most dominant performances seen at that level — winning the 2008 CBJJ Brazilian Nationals in both his weight class and the open weight division without conceding a single advantage. That same year, he added the IBJJF World Championship title at brown belt to his résumé, along with a runner-up finish at the IBJJF Pan American Championship.

In October 2008, Fabio Gurgel awarded Peinado his black belt after a brown belt tenure of approximately one and a half years — a graduation that reflected both the speed of his progression and the depth of his preparation for the challenges ahead.

Antonio Peinado's black belt career established him as one of the most consistently competitive heavyweights on the international circuit, with podium appearances spanning gi and no-gi formats at the sport's most prestigious events. Competing across the Super Pesado (100kg) and Pesadíssimo (over 100kg) divisions, he proved dangerous in both weight classes.

World and Pan American Championships

His presence at the IBJJF World Championship became a fixture on the sport's annual calendar. He earned bronze at the 2010 IBJJF World Championship and again at the 2011 IBJJF World Championship. His no-gi performances were equally decorated — bronze at the 2009 IBJJF World No-Gi Championship, silver at the 2011 IBJJF World No-Gi Championship, and bronze at the 2012 IBJJF World No-Gi Championship. At the Pan American Championship, Peinado claimed bronze in 2010 and silver in 2011.

European and Abu Dhabi Circuit Results

His performances in Europe were similarly strong — silver at the 2010 IBJJF European Championship and bronze at the 2014 IBJJF European Championship. On the Abu Dhabi circuit, he secured a runner-up finish at the 2010 UAEJJF Abu Dhabi World Pro. Domestically, he captured the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals No-Gi title in 2010 and contributed to Alliance's team championship victories in both 2009 and 2010 — affirming his value not only as an individual competitor but as a cornerstone of one of the sport's most storied teams.

In 2009, at a stage in his career when his black belt trajectory appeared limitless, Antonio Peinado suffered a severe knee injury that removed him from training for an entire year. The physical toll was compounded by mounting external pressure to abandon competitive sport and redirect his energy toward an academic career — a crossroads that ends many athletes' competitive lives.

Peinado credits his family as the decisive factor in his return. His mother Beth and brothers Ramon and Wagner provided the emotional and practical support that made continued commitment to the sport possible. The recovery that followed was not merely a personal victory — it was a demonstration of the resilience that would come to define his career's second chapter. His subsequent podium appearances at major international events after 2009 stand as evidence that the adversity did not diminish his competitive edge, but sharpened it.

In 2010, Antonio Peinado's reputation within elite grappling circles extended beyond sport competition when Demian Maia invited him to serve as a sparring partner in preparation for his fight against Kendall Grove at the UFC – The Ultimate Fighter 12 Finale. Maia sought training partners who could replicate Grove's unconventional frame at 6'6", and Peinado's own 6'4" build made him a precise simulation of that challenge. Maia went on to win the fight, and Peinado's contribution to that camp was considered invaluable.

The experience introduced Peinado to another elite figure in combat sports: UFC heavyweight Junior dos Santos, known as "Cigano." Impressed by the Alliance black belt's technical acumen and presence in the training environment, dos Santos extended an invitation for Peinado to join his coaching staff during The Ultimate Fighter 13. Beginning in 2019, he claimed the AJP Abu Dhabi World Pro Masters title in five consecutive years — 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023 — a streak that places him among the most decorated Masters competitors in his division on that circuit.

Complementing that record, Peinado also captured the AJP Grand Slam Abu Dhabi Masters title four times across 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023. Taken together, this body of work in the Masters division affirms exceptional competitive longevity — the ability not only to maintain elite performance well beyond the peak years of a typical black belt competitor, but to dominate systematically at an age when most athletes have long stepped away from the podium.
