Nicholas Maglicic

Nicholas Maglicic was born on October 17, 2000, in Sydney, Australia, and grew up in the Sutherland Shire region of his home city. From an early age, he demonstrated a natural affinity for physical competition, engaging in squad swimming, football (soccer), and baseball. That multi-sport background cultivated a base of athleticism and competitive instinct that would translate directly to the grappling mats.

At the age of 12, Maglicic's father introduced him to jiu-jitsu — a decision that would prove defining. His family sought out Rodney Ellis of Nova União, a historic and respected figure within Australian grappling, to provide Nicholas with a proper technical grounding. Ellis served as his primary instructor, guiding Maglicic through every foundational stage of development and shepherding him from white belt all the way through to brown belt.

While Rodney Ellis remained the central figure in Maglicic's early grappling education, Nicholas actively pursued cross-training opportunities throughout his development, forging relationships with a broad network of academies and coaches across Australia. He maintained particularly strong ties with Grappling Education, Sydney Wrestling Academy, and MyBJJ Lidcombe — three institutions that collectively shaped his technical identity.

Maglicic became a member of an informal collective known as the 'Secret Kumite', a group of Australian grapplers drawn from across the country who trained together across those same three gyms. The group embodied a philosophy of open, collaborative development — one Maglicic embraced wholeheartedly. This cross-training ethos extended beyond BJJ: alongside his progression on the gi and no-gi mats, Maglicic committed seriously to judo, earning his brown belt in that discipline by July 2022. The incorporation of judo reflected a broader commitment to building a well-rounded, technically versatile grappling game — one that drew from multiple competitive traditions rather than a single stylistic lineage.

Maglicic's connection to Atos Jiu-Jitsu began in 2019 when, shortly after completing high school, he traveled to Atos Jiu-Jitsu's headquarters in San Diego, California, for a training camp as a purple belt. The experience marked his first immersion in André Galvão's competitive environment and laid the groundwork for a deeper affiliation that would develop over the following years.

Maglicic made multiple return trips to Atos HQ, using those camps as direct preparation for major IBJJF tournaments. Through consistent presence and performance within that program, he earned international recognition as a member of André Galvão's Atos Jiu-Jitsu team — a significant distinction on the global circuit. His brown belt career built steadily toward a defining moment: on June 5, 2023, following his victory at the IBJJF World Championship, André Galvão promoted Nicholas Maglicic to black belt on the competition floor — the culmination of more than a decade of development across Australia and the United States.

Maglicic's competitive record traces a consistent upward trajectory across every belt level, from the juvenile division through one of the most decorated brown belt careers in recent Australian BJJ history.

Blue and Purple Belt: Establishing International Presence

His first international title came in 2017, when he claimed gold at the IBJJF Pan Pacific Championship as a juvenile blue belt — an early marker of the competitive caliber he would go on to demonstrate. At purple belt, Maglicic emerged as a dominant force on the international circuit. In 2019, he secured gold at both the IBJJF Pan Pacific Championship and the IBJJF No-Gi Pan Pacific Championship, establishing himself as a formidable presence across gi and no-gi formats. In 2020, he added an AJP Abu Dhabi Grand Slam World Tour title and reached the final of the IBJJF European Championship in the absolute division, earning silver — a result that underscored his ability to compete at the highest levels across both weight class and geography.

Brown Belt: A Career-Defining Run

The transition to brown belt brought sustained success on the largest stages. In 2022, Maglicic won gold at the IBJJF Pan Championship and captured the absolute title at that same event, before reaching the final of the IBJJF World Championship and earning silver. He returned to the Pan Championship in 2023 to claim gold once more, building direct momentum toward the performance that would define his colored belt career.

At the 2023 IBJJF World Championship, competing in the Super Pesado division (100.50 kg / 222.0 lbs), Maglicic won the gold medal — a victory that prompted André Galvão to award him his black belt on the competition floor on June 5, 2023. The win brought to a close a colored belt career defined by technical growth, international ambition, and the cross-disciplinary grappling foundation built across years of training in Australia and abroad.
