Nicholas Maglicic

Nicholas Maglicic was born on October 17, 2000, in Sydney, Australia, and grew up in the Sutherland Shire. From an early age, he gravitated toward physical competition, immersing himself in squad swimming, football (soccer), and baseball. That varied athletic background — each sport demanding distinct movement patterns, coordination, and competitive instincts — forged the adaptability that would later define his grappling. At age 12, his father introduced him to jiu-jitsu, setting in motion a competitive journey that would carry him to the highest levels of international BJJ.

For his son's formal jiu-jitsu education, the Maglicic family turned to Rodney Ellis of Nova União, a foundational figure in Australian grappling. Ellis guided Nicholas from white belt through brown belt, providing the technical framework and competitive mindset that underpinned his rise through the ranks.

Maglicic's development extended well beyond a single room or methodology. He cross-trained extensively, building strong ties with Grappling Education, Sydney Wrestling Academy, and MyBJJ Lidcombe. He also trained as part of a collective known as the 'Secret Kumite' — a group of grapplers drawn from across Australia who shared mats across those three academies, creating an internal competitive culture that sharpened his skills against a diverse range of styles and body types.

Parallel to his BJJ progression, Maglicic pursued judo with equal seriousness, earning a brown belt in the discipline by mid-2022. That investment reflected a broader philosophy of grappling education that distinguished his formative years and gave him a well-rounded base unusual among competitors his age.

Maglicic's association with Atos Jiu-Jitsu began in 2019, when he made his first visit to the team's San Diego headquarters as a purple belt, shortly after completing high school. The training camp introduced him to the environment and coaching staff surrounding André Galvão, and the experience left a lasting mark. Over the following years, he returned to Atos HQ on multiple occasions — timing his trips to align with preparation cycles ahead of major IBJJF tournaments — while maintaining his Australian roots and broader training network.

His colored belt career built steadily toward a breakthrough on the world stage. At the 2023 IBJJF Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championship, Maglicic claimed gold at brown belt, then reached the pinnacle of the pre-black-belt journey with a gold medal at the 2023 IBJJF World Jiu-Jitsu Championship in the brown belt division. On June 5, 2023 — the day of that World Championship victory — André Galvão promoted Maglicic to black belt, a moment that marked both personal milestone and a meaningful achievement for Australian BJJ on the world stage.

Establishing Elite No-Gi Credentials

Maglicic's black belt career demonstrated an immediate capacity to compete across formats at the international level. In 2025, he captured gold at the IBJJF World No-Gi Championship, establishing himself among the no-gi elite and confirming that his game translated cleanly beyond the gi. That same year, he won the ADCC Oceania & Asia Trials, earning qualification to ADCC 2026 — the sport's most prestigious submission grappling event.

Testing Against the World's Best

At ADCC 2026, Maglicic was eliminated in the opening round by Kaynan Duarte, one of the division's most dominant forces. Earlier in 2026, he had also suffered a decision loss to Nicholas Meregali at UFC BJJ 5 — a result that underscored the caliber of opposition he routinely sought out. Both performances reflected a competitor willing to test himself against the deepest talent in international grappling, regardless of individual outcomes.

His gi career in 2026 culminated in a place in the final of the IBJJF Gi World Championship — and the circumstances that followed would carry consequences extending well beyond the mat.

The Disqualification and Its Consequences

On September 22, 2026, Nicholas Maglicic was formally recognized as Australia's first black belt IBJJF Gi World Champion — a designation that arrived through the disqualification of his 2026 Worlds final opponent, Rider Samelo do Amaral.

USADA, contracted to conduct anti-doping testing at the 2026 IBJJF World Jiu-Jitsu Championship held on May 31, 2026, reported that a sample taken from Samelo do Amaral contained drostanolone, a drostanolone metabolite, and 19-norandrosterone — the latter serving as a marker associated with nandrolone or related compounds. All three substances are classified as non-specified anabolic agents banned at all times under the applicable Code.

Sanction and Result Annulment

Samelo do Amaral admitted the violation and accepted the sanction within 20 days of notification, triggering Article 10.8.1 of the Code and earning a one-year reduction from the standard four-year period of ineligibility. His resulting three-year suspension was backdated to July 1, 2026, the date his provisional suspension commenced. USADA further determined that his use of prohibited substances had begun on August 23, 2024, and consequently disqualified all competitive results — including medals, points, and prizes — achieved in IBJJF or other Code-signatory events from that date forward. The 2026 IBJJF Gi World Championship result was among those annulled.

A Milestone for Australian Grappling

The ruling elevated Maglicic to the position of 2026 IBJJF Gi World Champion in his division. The title carries significance beyond the individual: it represents the highest achievement by an Australian competitor in IBJJF gi competition at the black belt level, a milestone for a country that has steadily grown its presence on the international grappling circuit over the past two decades.
