Rodrigo Ribeiro

Rodrigo Ribeiro was born on November 17, 1990, in Mooca, a district of São Paulo, Brazil, and spent his formative years in Itaquera, also within the state of São Paulo. His path to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu began with a scheduling mix-up that would shape the entire course of his life. At age 9, Ribeiro asked his parents for permission to train judo, and his father agreed to enroll him. When he arrived at the local gym, however, he discovered he had misread the schedule — a BJJ class was underway instead. Already on the premises and curious, he stepped onto the mat and tried it out, falling in love with the art immediately.

That accidental first class set everything in motion. Ribeiro's first instructor, Edval Farias, introduced him to the fundamentals and guided him into competition by age 10. Though the time under Farias proved meaningful, Rodrigo eventually sought a more competition-driven environment. His father — a consistent force in shaping his son's martial arts journey — enrolled him in the academy of Eduardo Franco, a move that would prove transformative for Ribeiro's development as both an athlete and, in time, a coach.

Eduardo Franco's academy operated as an affiliate of Roberto Godoy's gym, placing Ribeiro within a structured, competition-focused lineage from the outset. Under Franco's guidance, Ribeiro progressed through every rank from white belt to black belt without interruption, building a technical foundation firmly rooted in the Godoi system's training philosophy. In November 2010, days after his 20th birthday, Ribeiro received his black belt — a milestone reflecting both his athletic growth and years of dedicated competitive effort.

The following year brought a significant transition. As Eduardo Franco stepped away from jiu-jitsu, the responsibility of leading the academy passed to his star pupil. Ribeiro assumed head coaching duties in 2011, while simultaneously deepening his own training through regular visits to Roberto Godoy's headquarters. This dual engagement — coaching his own students while continuing to sharpen his skills at the lineage's source — defined the approach he would carry forward. In 2013, when the Godoi team rebranded as G13, Ribeiro and his gym made the transition alongside them, cementing his identity as one of the team's most prominent representatives.

A Rare Standing Game Built Entirely Through BJJ

Rodrigo Ribeiro competes in the Super Pesado (super heavyweight) division at 100.50 kg / 222.0 lbs, and within that demanding weight class he has distinguished himself through an exceptional and somewhat unexpected attribute: elite throwing ability. Despite holding no formal background in judo or wrestling, Ribeiro developed a takedown game of a quality rarely seen among grapplers who came up exclusively through BJJ academies. Taking the Helm at 21

When Eduardo Franco stepped back from active coaching in 2011, Ribeiro was approximately 21 years old — placing him among the younger black belts in competitive BJJ to assume full head instructor responsibilities at a functioning academy. Balancing a high-level competition career with the demands of leading a gym required careful management, and Ribeiro met that challenge by maintaining close ties with Roberto Godoy's headquarters, where his own technical development continued to evolve in parallel with his teaching responsibilities.

Carrying the Lineage Forward

The coaching experience sharpened not only how Ribeiro prepared his students but also how he refined his own competitive identity. His regular presence at G13's central training hub allowed him to absorb and transmit the team's methodology with fidelity. When the Godoi organization rebranded as G13 in 2013, Ribeiro guided his academy through the transition as a unified part of the larger team structure. In this capacity, he represents a direct continuation of the Franco/Godoi coaching lineage — a practitioner who absorbed the system as a student, advanced it as a competitor, and passes it on as an instructor.
