Matheus Lutes was born on January 27, 1996, in Belo Horizonte, the capital of the southeastern Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. Raised in the Aglomerado da Serra — the largest favela in Belo Horizonte — Lutes developed a deep relationship with sport and physical activity from a young age, a drive that would ultimately define his life's trajectory.

At 12, he took his first formal steps in combat sports by joining a local judo club in the Aglomerado da Serra. He pursued football (soccer) in parallel, reflecting the broad athletic ambition of his early adolescence. These two disciplines ran alongside each other for two years, giving Lutes a competitive foundation and an appreciation for the dedication martial arts demand.

The pivotal shift toward Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu came on his 14th birthday, when Pastor Rodrigo Pena — a brown belt who led the Presbyterian church Lutes attended — extended an invitation to join his BJJ classes. Pena taught out of a room in the church, holding sessions twice a week in an informal but sincere setting. What began as a simple invitation evolved into something far more significant: Pastor Pena became not only Lutes' first BJJ instructor but also a fatherly figure and spiritual anchor. Pena's genuine love for jiu-jitsu left a lasting impression on the young athlete, planting the seed for Lutes' eventual pursuit of a professional career in combat sports.

During his mid-teens, Matheus Lutes relocated from Brazil to Portugal, settling in the Carcavelos area on the outskirts of Lisbon. Far from home, he continued to train BJJ and immerse himself in the European grappling community, steadily building both his technical game and his network within the sport.

A defining moment came in 2014, when Paulo Miyao and João Miyao — students of Cicero Costha and among the most decorated competitors of their generation — traveled to Lisbon for the 2014 IBJJF European Open Championship. The Miyao brothers stayed at Lutes' apartment during their visit, and the parties trained together throughout. The connection forged during those sessions led to a remarkable invitation: the Miyaos offered Lutes the opportunity to come to New York City and train alongside them at Unity Jiu-Jitsu Academy.

For a young athlete still finding his financial footing, the offer was extraordinary but initially out of reach. Unable to fund the move on his own, Lutes was forced to decline — until a conversation with his Lisbon training partner, Luigi Mazzetti di Pietralata, an Italian entrepreneur based in Portugal, changed everything. Upon hearing of the missed opportunity, Luigi generously offered to sponsor Lutes' relocation to the United States. That act of kindness proved to be one of the most consequential moments of Lutes' career, opening the door to the competitive environment in New York City that would ultimately shape him into a world-class competitor.

Upon arriving in New York City, Matheus Lutes quickly embedded himself in the local competitive scene. Through the tournament circuit, he developed a close friendship with Marcelo Garcia and his team, a relationship that reflected the tight-knit nature of New York's grappling community during that era.

In 2017, with a pregnant wife and a series of major life decisions on the horizon, Lutes made the significant choice to transition to the Alliance New York City branch. The move was handled with professionalism and mutual respect, and Lutes maintained strong relationships with his former coaches and training partners throughout the transition. That same year, he validated the sacrifice and investment that had carried him across two continents by claiming gold at the IBJJF World Championship at purple belt.

The period that followed ranked among the most demanding of his life. Balancing a newborn child, a family relocation, and an active competition schedule tested Lutes in ways that extended well beyond the mats. By 2018, with his personal situation stabilized, he redirected his full focus toward training and competing — and the results were immediate. Lutes assembled one of the most dominant brown belt seasons in recent IBJJF history, collecting titles at IBJJF Worlds No-Gi, Pans No-Gi, and the KASAI Elite Challenge, while also reaching the podium at KASAI Pro III and the IBJJF Pan Championship in the gi.

In December 2019, in recognition of his sustained excellence and development as both a competitor and martial artist, Lutes received his black belt promotion — a milestone marking the culmination of a journey begun in a church room in Belo Horizonte more than a decade earlier. Representing the United States competitively despite his Brazilian roots, Lutes competes in the Peso Médio division (82.30 kg / 181.5 lbs).

Matheus Lutes established himself as one of the most consistent no-gi competitors of his generation, accumulating IBJJF World No-Gi titles across three consecutive belt levels. He claimed the no-gi world title at blue belt in 2015, followed by gold at purple belt in 2016 and brown belt in 2018 — a sequence that demonstrated both the longevity and the reliability of his competitive performances.

Consecutive Pan No-Gi Titles

His dominance extended to the IBJJF Pan No-Gi Championship, where he achieved four consecutive titles: blue belt in 2015, purple belt in both 2016 and 2017, and brown belt in 2018. This consistency across belt levels and tournament formats underscored the technical depth of his grappling and his ability to perform at an elite level regardless of competitive context.

Gi Credentials and Submission-Only Success

Lutes also proved his versatility in the gi, earning the IBJJF World Championship title at purple belt in 2017 — a result that confirmed his ability to compete at the highest level across both rulesets. His foray into submission-only competition added another dimension to his résumé, with a first-place finish at the KASAI Elite Challenge in 2018 and a podium appearance at KASAI Pro III the same year.

The Defining 2018 Brown Belt Season

The 2018 brown belt campaign stands as the defining chapter of his pre-black belt career. In a single year, Lutes captured titles at IBJJF Worlds No-Gi, IBJJF Pans No-Gi, and the KASAI Elite Challenge, while placing second at the IBJJF Pan Championship in the gi and third at the IBJJF World Championship in the gi. This extraordinary output across both gi and no-gi formats, and across IBJJF and independent promotion platforms alike, built the foundation for his black belt promotion in December 2019 and announced his arrival as a legitimate force at the sport's highest level.
