Kim Terra

Born on November 26, 1987, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Kim Terra grew up in a household that would become deeply intertwined with high-level Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. His entry into the sport in 2002 was shaped decisively by his older brother, Caio Terra, whose rising prominence in BJJ served as both a blueprint and a direct pathway to the mats. Where many practitioners discover the sport through local academies or friends, Kim's introduction was a family affair — grounded in the example of a sibling who would go on to build one of BJJ's most recognizable associations.

From the beginning, Kim trained under Ricardo Vieira, establishing what would become one of the most enduring coach-athlete relationships of his career. Vieira's instruction instilled the technical discipline and competitive sharpness that would define Kim's rise through the ranks — a foundation that held firm through every phase of his journey.

As Kim progressed through the colored belt ranks, Paulo Mauricio Strauch guided his development, awarding him his blue, purple, and brown belts. The brown belt years proved especially active on the competitive circuit, culminating in a 1st Place finish at the 2009 CBJJ Brazilian Nationals — a result that underscored his readiness for the sport's highest level.

That same year, however, brought a significant setback. A controversial incident at the 2009 IBJJF World Championship resulted in a two-year suspension from IBJJF competition, abruptly interrupting what had been a sharply ascending trajectory. Rather than stepping away from the sport entirely, Kim returned to Brazil and pursued a law degree — a deliberate commitment to personal growth during a period when competition was not an option.

Throughout the suspension, Kim maintained his training under Ricardo Vieira, continuing to refine the technical foundations of his game. That dedication was formally recognized in January 2010, when Vieira awarded Kim his black belt — a milestone achieved while the suspension remained in effect, affirming that his evolution as a practitioner had not been derailed by the circumstances surrounding the ban.

Prior to the 2009 controversy, Kim Terra had already taken a significant step onto the international stage. In 2007, he relocated to the United States to teach alongside his brother Caio Terra at the Cesar Gracie Academy in California. Instructing at such a well-regarded facility placed Kim within a high-level competitive training environment and established his credentials as both a practitioner and an educator at a notably young age.

His time in California coincided with a strong stretch of competitive results. A standout performance came in 2007, when Kim earned 2nd Place at the IBJJF World Championship No-Gi while competing at brown belt — a result that signaled his capacity to contend with elite-level competition before even receiving his black belt. The dual demands of teaching and competing during these years forged Kim into a well-rounded figure within the North American BJJ scene.

Following his return to competitive jiu-jitsu after the IBJJF suspension, Kim Terra affiliated with Checkmat, one of the sport's most established competitive organizations. The association provided a structured team environment as he rebuilt his competitive profile at the black belt level.

In 2013, Kim departed from Checkmat following a disagreement — a turning point that led him back toward his family's corner of the sport. He joined CTBJJA (Caio Terra Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Association), his brother's growing organization, alongside fellow competitor Yuri Simões. The move marked both a personal and professional realignment, uniting Kim with the team that bore his family's name and vision.

The transition to CTA proved professionally fruitful. The latter portion of Kim's competitive career, shaped by the association's culture and training environment, produced some of his most consistent results on the international circuit — with multiple podium finishes across gi and no-gi formats from 2013 onward.

Range, Versatility, and Peak Output

Kim Terra's black belt competitive career stands out for its breadth — both geographically and physically. Competing across the featherweight, lightweight, and middleweight divisions, he demonstrated a degree of adaptability uncommon even among elite practitioners. His willingness to move between weight classes reflected confidence in the technical depth of his game rather than dependence on any single physical attribute.

The peak years of his competitive output spanned roughly 2012 to 2019, with a particularly dense concentration of results between 2015 and 2017. During that window, Kim collected first-place finishes at the IBJJF San Francisco Open, IBJJF Las Vegas Open, IBJJF NYC BJJ Pro, and IBJJF Rio Open — all in 2015 — while also reaching the podium at the IBJJF World Championship with a 3rd Place finish that year. A 3rd Place at the IBJJF World Championship No-Gi in 2016 further confirmed his standing among the sport's premier black belts.

Master Division Success and International Reach

Kim's career longevity found further expression in the Master divisions. He captured gold at the IBJJF Pan Championship in 2017 and returned to claim the title again in 2019 as a Master 1 competitor — a result that highlighted his ability to sustain elite-level performance deep into his competitive life.

His international footprint extended well beyond North and South America. Kim competed at events in Moscow and Doha, appeared on the 2015 EBI 155 lbs Tournament card — finishing 3rd in the submission-only format — and took part in competitions in Guatemala, demonstrating a consistent appetite for diverse competitive environments. Across gi, no-gi, and submission-only formats, Kim Terra built a record that reflects both the versatility of his skills and the durability of his commitment to the sport.
