Frank Rosenthal

Frank Rosenthal was born on October 12, 1990, in the United States, and developed an early passion for grappling that would shape the entire arc of his athletic career. His introduction to combat sports began in high school, where wrestling provided the physical and mental framework — pressure, body control, and relentless drive — that would later translate directly to success on the BJJ mats.

Rosenthal carried that passion into higher education, enrolling at East Stroudsburg University to study Physical Education and competing on the university's wrestling team at the collegiate level. It was during this formative period that his friend Eric Sherman introduced him to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, opening a new dimension to his grappling journey. The wrestling foundation he built through years of high school and collegiate competition gave him an intuitive grasp of takedowns, weight distribution, and positional control — attributes that transferred seamlessly into his growth as a BJJ practitioner.

Building the Foundation Under Carl Massaro

Following his graduation from East Stroudsburg University in 2013, Rosenthal joined a Renzo Gracie Academy affiliate led by Carl Massaro, immersing himself in the technically rigorous environment of the RGA network. Massaro served as his primary instructor, guiding Rosenthal methodically through the belt ranks and ultimately promoting him to brown belt. The structured mentorship within the RGA system provided Rosenthal with the technical depth and competitive mindset needed to develop his game at a high level.

Mentorship from Danaher and Pelinkovic

Within the broader RGA network, Rosenthal trained under multiple world-class coaches, most notably Doug Pelinkovic and John Danaher. Exposure to Danaher's highly systematic, leg-lock-centric approach to submission grappling proved especially formative, expanding Rosenthal's technical arsenal and sharpening his analytical understanding of the game. Even before earning his black belt, Rosenthal took on a coaching role at Renzo Gracie Bayside, a clear signal of his technical maturity and dedication to developing the next generation of grapplers.

Black Belt Promotion

On September 24, 2018, Rosenthal received his black belt in a ceremony that captured the collaborative spirit defining the RGA network. Renzo Gracie, John Danaher, and Doug Pelinkovic all attended the promotion, with the belt awarded under Pelinkovic's name — a meaningful reflection of the trust and mentorship built between coach and student over the years.

Dominance on the Invitational Scene

Rosenthal built his competitive reputation in the no-gi, submission-only format — a circuit that rewards technical creativity and finishing ability over point accumulation. His performances across respected invitational events demonstrated a polished, submission-focused game well-suited to the 64 kg / 141.5 lbs (Peso Pluma) weight class.

The year 2018 stood as a landmark in his career. He claimed back-to-back titles at the RISE Invitational, winning both RISE Invitational 3 2018 and RISE Invitational 4 2018, before capping the run with a title at ONNIT Invitational 8 2018. Three invitational victories in a single year — the same year he earned his black belt — established Rosenthal as one of the more dangerous finishers on the invitational circuit.

A Record Built Across Belt Levels

Rosenthal's competitive pedigree extended well before his black belt success. As a purple belt, he won the ADCC Nationals in 2014 and reached the final of the IBJJF Pans No-Gi in 2012. Earlier, as a blue belt, he earned a silver medal at the IBJJF New York Open in 2011 and a bronze at the IBJJF Pans No-Gi that same year. This sustained record across multiple belt levels reflects a competitive drive that never waited for the next promotion to produce results.

Seeking to further sharpen his submission-oriented game, Rosenthal spent time training with ADCC veteran Ryan Hall at 50/50 Jiu-Jitsu Academy — an experience that reinforced the finishing instincts that define his approach to competition.
