About this video
The Hop Roll is a guillotine variation designed for situations where the opponent is attempting a fast guard pass with one knee up. This move is a calculated risk, baiting the opponent to reach for an underhook, which is a common strategy for sweeping or climbing to the back.
- Start with your knee up on the leg and the other knee on the ground, ready for a fast-paced exchange.
- Place a hand on the floor to prevent falling backward, maintaining your weight forward.
- Anticipate the opponent's movement towards the underhook and develop timing to open up space for them.
- As the opponent moves, execute a roll past their movement and roll back over to the top position.
- With your hand on your chest and the other on the floor, pull your elbow back first, then push your body up to secure the guillotine.
- Be aware that you are setting a trap and be ready to execute the move as soon as you detect the opponent's motion.
- If the opponent resists the half-guard smash guillotine, transition into the Hop Roll and roll back on top.
- Maintain a wide base with your knees and hand on the ground for stability.
- As you roll over and come back on top, pull your elbow back and lean up to tighten the guillotine.
- Practice the move with a partner, focusing on bringing your hips up and opening your hand along the way to land in the guillotine position.
- Repetition is key; practice the move to ensure fluidity and readiness when it's time to apply it in a live situation.
This technique is part of a series of moves that can be morphed and transitioned between, depending on the opponent's reactions. It's essential to have this fluidity in your arsenal for executing rolling guillotines effectively.
