About this video
Defending and countering a guillotine choke from within the closed guard involves a series of strategic movements:
- Recognize the risk of being choked with a traditional grip head-based guillotine even when you have your opponent in your closed guard.
- As your opponent reaches for the guillotine, immediately reach over their shoulder to prevent any twisting or high elbow variations.
- Stay on your toes rather than sitting on your feet to maintain mobility and prevent being hipped over or pulled into a guillotine.
- Lunge forward to bring your opponent onto their back while reaching over their shoulder, driving your weight onto them.
- Use your chest to pin their hands and keep their elbow elevated, while your hip drives into theirs and your shoulder presses into their neck.
- Reach high with your elbow, fitting it tightly along your opponent's body, and go palm to palm under their back.
- Flex to secure the submission, ensuring your chest, hip, and shoulder are aligned and heavy, creating a straight line of contact.
- Practice the timing and execution of these movements with a training partner to develop a smooth and effective defense and counter-attack.
By mastering these details, you can prevent being submitted from within your closed guard and turn the tables on your opponent with a submission of your own.
