Thiago Gaia

Thiago Gaia was born on March 25, 1990, in São Paulo's state capital, though his family's roots lie in Ilhabela, a scenic island just off the São Paulo coastline. His birth in the capital was a practical necessity — his mother required access to adequate medical care during a high-risk pregnancy. Shortly after his arrival, the Gaia family returned to Ilhabela, where Thiago spent his formative years.

At age 8, his mother enrolled him in a local judo club, seeking a constructive outlet for his boundless energy. The decision proved transformative. Sport became central to Thiago's life from that point forward, and he developed a well-rounded athletic identity on the island — competing in football, swimming, and sailing alongside his martial arts training. At age 10, he added jiu-jitsu to the mix, beginning his BJJ education under coach Rezende in Ilhabela.

The spark that ignited his passion for the gentle art came from Pride FC, the celebrated Japanese MMA promotion. Watching Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira compete in the Pride ring left a deep impression on the young Gaia and gave him a clear competitive idol to aspire toward. Despite that early enthusiasm, jiu-jitsu remained a casual pursuit through his early teenage years. It was not until he turned 15 that a genuine competitive drive took hold, pushing him to invest fully in his training and development.

Thiago Gaia's ascent through the belt ranks reflects both the quality of coaches who guided him and his own determination to seek out the highest level of training available. At age 16, he received his blue belt from coach Nelson, who operated a TT academy affiliate in São Sebastião. Recognizing that his ambitions demanded a more elite environment, Gaia made the decisive move to relocate to São Paulo city to train at TT headquarters — a gym that housed some of Brazil's most talented grapplers, including Cobrinha, Eduardo Telles, André Galvão, Tererê, and Marcelo Mafra.

When TT's eventual collapse forced another transition, Gaia found his most formative mentor in Leonardo Vieira, first through Brasa and later through Checkmat, the team Vieira helped build. Under Vieira's guidance, Gaia received both his purple and brown belts — a period that produced some of his most significant competitive results. In 2007, competing as a junior blue belt, he claimed gold at the IBJJF World Championship. His purple belt campaign further cemented his reputation as one of the sport's most exciting young prospects: he finished runner-up at the IBJJF World Championship in 2009 and took gold at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals in 2010. At brown belt, he continued his upward trajectory, earning a silver medal at the IBJJF Pan American Championship in 2011.

Around 2010, Checkmat's competitive core began relocating to the United States, leaving Gaia without a viable local training structure. That shift, combined with a growing ambition to compete in mixed martial arts, led him to join B9 under Marco Barbosa. On December 7, 2012, Barbosa awarded Thiago Gaia his black belt — marking the formal beginning of his elite competitive career.

Gaia emerged at black belt as one of the most prominent figures in São Paulo's No-Gi grappling circuit, a reputation built on a colored belt career that had long identified him as a fighter of exceptional potential. Competing at Peso Leve (76kg/167lbs), he wasted no time translating that promise into results at the sport's highest level.

He became a consistent force at the FPJJ Circuito Paulista No-Gi, capturing gold at that event in both 2013 and 2015. His 2015 season stood as the peak of his black belt grappling campaign: he claimed the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals No-Gi title, reached the final of the ADCC Brazilian Trials — finishing runner-up — and earned a bronze medal at the IBJJF World No-Gi Championship. Those performances confirmed what his purple belt days had long suggested: that Gaia belonged among the elite of Brazil's No-Gi scene.

Gaia's move to B9 under Marco Barbosa served a dual purpose — providing a stable BJJ home after Checkmat's restructuring while also supporting a deliberate ambition to expand into mixed martial arts. To develop the striking and overall MMA skillset that transition demanded, he began training at Chute Boxe Diego Lima, one of Brazil's most historically significant combat sports institutions.

This parallel structure — elite No-Gi grappling competition through B9 alongside MMA preparation at Chute Boxe Diego Lima — reflects the kind of dual development that has defined the careers of many top Brazilian grapplers who compete on multiple fronts.
