Julian Espinosa

José Julián Espinosa Flores was born on August 24, 2000, in Costa Rica, the son of a Costa Rican father and a Panamanian mother. A natural athlete from an early age, he spent his childhood years competing in volleyball at school — but it was the discovery of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu that redirected the course of his life entirely.

At age 9, Espinosa was introduced to jiu-jitsu through a family friend who practiced the martial art. That single encounter proved to be a defining moment, pulling him headfirst into the sport and its growing community in Costa Rica. From that point forward, BJJ became the central pursuit of his daily life, laying the foundation for what would become an exceptional competitive career.

Espinosa's structured development began under Juan Barrantes, whose kids' program provided a strong technical foundation during his formative years on the mat. He continued progressing through the earlier belt ranks under Javier Valenciano, steadily refining the technical game that would later distinguish him on the international stage.

Upon reaching brown belt, Espinosa made a pivotal shift in his training environment, joining Arturo Wesson's Renzo Gracie Academy affiliate school in Costa Rica. The move elevated his development as a high-level competitor in measurable ways. On December 16, 2022, in a ceremony led by Arturo Wesson and Rolles Gracie, Espinosa received his black belt — a formal recognition of both his technical mastery and his growing list of competitive achievements.

Espinosa established himself as a formidable no-gi competitor long before receiving his black belt, signaling early on the direction his career would take. In 2022, competing as a brown belt, he claimed gold at the IBJJF European Championship NOGI and reached the final of the IBJJF World Championship NOGI, finishing as runner-up — a performance that announced his arrival as one of the sport's most promising young talents.

His transition to black belt competition in 2023 produced a commanding run of results across the international circuit. Espinosa successfully defended his European Championship NOGI title at the black belt level, demonstrating rare consistency at the highest tier of competition. He added gold at the 2023 IBJJF JJ CON NOGI and the Finishers Money In The Bank event that same year. His 2023 campaign also featured a silver medal at the IBJJF Pan Championship NOGI, a silver at the IBJJF American Nationals NOGI, and a bronze at the IBJJF World Championship NOGI — a body of work that firmly established him among the elite in his division.

Espinosa competes in the Peso Pena division (70 kg / 154.5 lbs), representing Costa Rica on the international stage. That distinction reflects both his national pride and his standing as one of the most accomplished BJJ athletes to emerge from Central America.
