Sérgio Souza was born on July 23, 1964, in Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil — a city far removed from the epicenters of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at the time. His introduction to the art came at approximately 14 years of age, igniting a lifelong commitment that would define the trajectory of his career. Driven by competitive ambition, Souza relocated to Rio de Janeiro to train at the most prestigious address in BJJ: the academy of Carlson Gracie.

His early years on the mats translated almost immediately into results. In 1984, Souza claimed 1st Place at the Copa Lightning Bolt, and by 1985 he earned the title of "Athlete of the Year" from LINJI — a recognition that signaled his rapid ascent within the sport. He followed that honor with a 1st Place finish at the Rio de Janeiro State Tournament in 1986, then added victories at the Copa Blue Marlin Champion in 1988 and the Copa Company Champion at the RJ State Championship that same year. His 1st Place finish at the Copa Armazem do Esporte / RJ State Championship in 1989 capped a remarkable run of competitive success, all achieved before reaching the black belt level.

Training under Carlson Gracie placed Sérgio Souza within one of the most storied and combative lineages in BJJ history. Carlson's Rio de Janeiro academy was renowned for producing tough, competition-hardened grapplers, and Souza absorbed that ethos fully. Following his black belt promotion in 1990, Sérgio Souza launched his coaching career by establishing his own gym in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro. That initial step into instruction laid the groundwork for one of the more significant team-building efforts of his career. In the late 1990s — likely between 1997 and 1999 — Souza co-founded the Rio Jiu-Jitsu Club alongside Murilo Bustamante, a respected and accomplished figure within Brazilian combat sports.

The club's formation aligns with one of Bolão's most notable coaching achievements: a 1st Place finish at the Brazilian Team Nationals in 1997, a result that reflected both the quality of his instruction and the competitive readiness of the athletes he had developed. The Rio Jiu-Jitsu Club quickly established itself as a competitive force in Brazilian BJJ, and the partnership with Bustamante lent the organization significant credibility. Together, they built a program that demonstrated Souza's capacity to translate his own competitive experience into high-level athlete development.

Throughout his competitive career, Sérgio "Bolão" Souza earned wide recognition for a guard game that was both technically sophisticated and physically imposing. Competing primarily in the Peso Médio division at 82 kilograms, he brought a refined, guard-oriented approach to every match — one forged through years of pressure-tested training within the Carlson Gracie system.

His competition record from 1984 through 1989 demonstrated consistent dominance at the state and national levels, with titles accumulated across multiple championships and formats. In 2002, Sérgio Souza relocated to the United States, settling in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he dedicated himself to teaching Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu until 2005. His tenure in Philadelphia placed him among a wave of Brazilian BJJ instructors who brought the art to North American audiences during the early 2000s — a period of significant expansion for the sport outside of Brazil. After concluding his time in Philadelphia, Souza returned to Brazil. He resumed active coaching in March 2017 at the Academia Rio Sport Center, re-engaging with the Brazilian BJJ community and continuing his work as an instructor and developer of competitive athletes.
