Gabriel Figueiró's career shifted decisively after his 19th birthday, when he relocated from Lisbon to São Paulo to train full-time at the Alliance 'Matriz' Academy. There, he came under the guidance of Fábio Gurgel and Michael Langhi — two of the most decorated figures in Alliance's storied history — whose influence elevated Figueiró into one of the top lightweight competitors of his generation.
Colored-Belt Excellence
His colored-belt record reflects the consistency and technical depth he developed within the Alliance system. At blue belt, he claimed gold at the IBJJF European Open in 2015, announcing his arrival on the international circuit. Runner-up finishes at the IBJJF Pan Championship at both blue (2015) and purple (2016) belt confirmed that his European Open performance was no anomaly. By purple belt, he returned to capture the IBJJF European Open title in 2017, cementing his reputation as one of the most reliable performers across multiple belt levels on the IBJJF circuit.
Brown Belt Titles and Coaching Responsibilities
The brown belt chapter brought further validation of his elite standing. Figueiró won the IBJJF South American Championship in 2017, the IBJJF São Paulo Open in 2017, and the IBJJF São Paulo BJJ Pro in 2018, accumulating titles across varied competition formats. He also reached the IBJJF Pan Championship final at purple belt and continued to challenge at the highest levels as a brown belt, including a runner-up finish at the 2019 IBJJF European Open. Alongside his competitive pursuits, Gabriel took on a coaching role at the Alliance HQ Academy — a position that reflected the trust placed in him by the team's leadership.
In June 2019, Fábio Gurgel and Michael Langhi promoted Gabriel Figueiró to the rank of black belt, marking the formal recognition of a journey that had carried him from the gyms of Lisbon to the heart of one of the world's most successful jiu-jitsu academies.
