Brandon Walensky

Born on April 5, 1992, in the United States, Brandon Walensky spent his childhood and early teenage years as a competitive athlete in football (soccer) and basketball. As he matured, his focus shifted away from team sports and toward martial arts — a transition driven largely by his father, who firmly believed that structured martial arts training would shape his son's character and athleticism.

At 13, after encouragement from his father, Walensky enrolled in judo classes at a BJJ and judo gym in San Marcos. Any initial hesitation dissolved quickly; he discovered a natural affinity for grappling and trained judo with genuine dedication over the next two years. He then added Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to his schedule, training both disciplines in parallel before ultimately committing exclusively to the submissions-based side of grappling — a decision that would define the entire arc of his athletic career.

From white belt through brown belt, Brandon Walensky's technical and competitive foundation was built under the guidance of coach Paulo Fernando Augusto. Training out of the San Marcos area, Walensky developed into one of the most compelling grapplers of his generation well before reaching the black belt division.

Brown Belt Breakthrough

His brown belt career brought him to mainstream grappling audiences through a string of high-profile results across multiple formats. He captured double gold at the IBJJF World No-Gi Championship as a brown belt in both 2013 and 2015, and added the IBJJF American Nationals No-Gi title in 2013. Beyond the IBJJF circuit, he reached the podium at EBI 1 in 2014, finishing third at the inaugural event, before earning a runner-up finish at the Metamoris Challenger in 2015. Accumulated across gi, no-gi, and submission-only formats, these performances established Walensky as a versatile and dangerous competitor whose reputation had grown far beyond his belt level.

Walensky's next chapter began when he relocated to San Diego and joined the Clark Gracie Academy (CGA) as a brown belt under Clark Gracie. The move proved transformative — not only accelerating his competitive development but also introducing him to coaching, a craft he began refining under Clark Gracie's mentorship while continuing to sharpen his own game.

On December 16, 2016, Clark Gracie formally promoted Walensky to black belt, recognizing both his exceptional competitive record and his growth as a practitioner and instructor within the academy. Walensky represents Clark Gracie JJ at the black belt level and competes in the Peso Pena division (70 kg / 154.5 lbs).

Walensky carried the same competitive effectiveness from his colored belt years directly into the black belt division. In 2016, ahead of his formal promotion, he claimed double gold at the IBJJF Chicago Summer Open, winning both the gi and no-gi titles on the same day — an early signal of what was to come.

Building a Black Belt Record

In 2017, Walensky delivered one of his most productive stretches on the international circuit, capturing both the IBJJF Mexico Summer Open Championship and the IBJJF Mexico Summer No-Gi Open Championship, confirming his ability to perform at the elite level across both formats. That year also brought a runner-up finish at the IBJJF Miami Fall Open, a result that carried momentum into 2018 with second-place finishes at both the IBJJF Denver Open and the IBJJF Denver Fall Open, along with a third-place finish at the IBJJF San Diego Open. Across multiple years and tournament formats, Walensky's black belt record reflects a competitor who continues to build on the dynamic grappling reputation he forged long before reaching the sport's highest rank.
