Eoghan O'Flanagan

Eoghan O'Flanagan was born on March 15, 1996, in London, England, and grew up in the North West area of the city. His martial arts journey began remarkably early — before he had outgrown his toddler years, he was already training judo, a discipline he pursued competitively through childhood until the age of 11.

At 14, O'Flanagan attempted to return to his old judo club, but a scheduling mix-up redirected the entire course of his athletic life. Arriving at the sports centre at the wrong time, he walked into a jiu-jitsu class instead. Rather than leaving, he joined in — and the technical overlap with judo was immediately apparent. That unplanned session proved decisive, and he committed to training from that point forward.

His early progression was deliberate: three sessions per week for the first six months, before dedication took over completely. From ages 14 to 18, O'Flanagan trained seven days a week, weaving judo sessions into a schedule built around BJJ. That intensive, dual-discipline foundation shaped the athletic intelligence and competitive drive that would define his career.

O'Flanagan's formative BJJ years were shaped by Felipe de Souza, Rory Quarrier, Anthony Chahal, and Nicky Robinson, with Anthony Chahal and Nicky Robinson serving as his primary coaches through the belt ranking system. At 18, he relocated to Cardiff, Wales, to attend university, training under Craig Ewers during those years before returning to New School BJJ in London to continue his development.

The ADCC Sparring Partnership That Changed Everything

Around 2015, a pivotal shift occurred when Nicky Robinson began preparing for the ADCC Trials and tapped O'Flanagan as one of his primary sparring partners. The demands of ADCC-format no-gi grappling pushed O'Flanagan to research and develop leg-locking techniques in earnest. What started as preparation support for a training partner gradually became the defining technical pillar of his own competitive identity.

On April 28, 2018, O'Flanagan received his black belt at New School BJJ. Although Anthony Chahal and Nicky Robinson guided him throughout his development, the promotion was formally conducted by Helio Soneca, the association's team leader.

O'Flanagan competes exclusively in the no-gi ruleset, built around a submission-hunting approach that makes him a consistent finishing threat against high-level competition. The Heel Hook stands as his signature weapon — a technique developed deliberately through systematic research into leg-locking systems during his time supporting Nicky Robinson's ADCC preparation in 2015.

What began as a pragmatic effort to sharpen no-gi skills for ADCC-format competition evolved into a career-defining technical specialty. His deep investment in lower-body attacks gave him an edge that would prove decisive in major tournaments, enabling him to submit world-class opponents who might otherwise neutralize more conventional approaches. The combination of a submission-first mindset and surgical precision in leg locks became the hallmark of his grappling identity.

O'Flanagan earned his berth at the ADCC 2022 World Championship by winning the ADCC European Trials in 2021 — a qualification that set the stage for one of the tournament's most memorable underdog runs. Competing in his weight division, he submitted two of the bracket's most recognized favorites back-to-back: Xande Ribeiro and Mason Fowler. Those results made one thing unmistakably clear — O'Flanagan was not a qualifier filling a bracket slot, but a legitimate finishing threat capable of taking out elite opposition.

Semifinal Exit and Final Standing

His run through the division carried him to the semi-finals, where Giancarlo Bodoni handed him his first defeat of the tournament. The run concluded in the 3rd/4th place match, where Vagner Rocha submitted O'Flanagan via toe hold at 8:43, placing him fourth overall. The performance firmly established O'Flanagan as one of Europe's premier no-gi competitors on the international stage and validated the technical path he had committed to since 2015.

Following his ADCC 2022 World Championship appearance, O'Flanagan continued to build on his international momentum within the European no-gi scene. Later in 2022, he captured the GrappleFest 90kg title, demonstrating that his ADCC performances translated into consistent results at major European events.

In 2024, O'Flanagan won the AIGA European Trials, affirming his continued relevance at the elite qualification level years after his initial ADCC breakthrough. That same year, he co-founded Los Banditos Grappling Club alongside some of London's top no-gi grapplers — a collective built around elite-level training and a unified competitive outlook. In mid-2024, O'Flanagan announced a weight cut to the under-80kg division and entered the Craig Jones Invitational, signaling the start of a new chapter in his competitive career.
