Denny Prokopos

Born in San Francisco around 1988, Denny Prokopos found his way to the mats through an unexpected gateway: professional wrestling. As a child captivated by its theatrical athleticism, he stumbled upon early UFC footage while searching for pro wrestling content — a discovery that permanently altered his trajectory. The raw, unfiltered nature of combat sports on display in the UFC resonated with him on a fundamental level, igniting a genuine pursuit of martial arts.

At age 12, Prokopos began his Jiu-Jitsu training under Charles Gracie, where he quickly demonstrated a natural aptitude for grappling. His formative years covered both Gi and No-Gi fundamentals, but it was the No-Gi format that immediately seized his imagination. Its faster pace, emphasis on pure athleticism, and absence of the cloth game aligned instinctively with his competitive sensibilities — and pointed toward the path he would ultimately define.

As his game matured, Prokopos sought out Eddie Bravo, whose unorthodox, innovation-driven approach to No-Gi grappling mirrored his own instincts on the mat. Beginning with private lessons under Bravo, he quickly recognized a deep alignment between his own sensibilities and the 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu system. By approximately age 16, he had committed fully to Bravo's methodology, dedicating his training entirely to the 10th Planet framework.

During his high school years, Prokopos supplemented his grappling with wrestling, adding takedown proficiency and top-game pressure to his arsenal. An injury in his final year cut that pursuit short, but the wrestling foundation he built remained a meaningful component of his overall game. Rather than pursuing a conventional academic path after high school, Prokopos made a defining choice — he left academic life entirely to train Jiu-Jitsu full time.

That commitment produced a landmark achievement in 2009, when Eddie Bravo awarded Prokopos his black belt, making him the very first black belt ever graduated under the 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu system. The milestone was not merely symbolic — it represented the culmination of years of disciplined training and established Prokopos as both a product and a standard-bearer of Bravo's vision for No-Gi grappling.

Prokopos built his competitive reputation through a series of strong performances across the most respected No-Gi grappling platforms of his era. As early as 2004, competing as a blue belt, he claimed a bronze medal at the Pan American Championship — an early signal of his potential. That promise was confirmed in 2007 when, competing at brown belt, he took gold at the IBJJF World No-Gi Championship, announcing himself as one of the most dangerous grapplers in his division.

In 2009, the same year he received his black belt, Prokopos added the NAGA Arnold Grappling Championship to his record, further cementing his standing in the No-Gi competitive landscape. The following year brought his most prestigious international achievement: the FILA Grappling World Championship title in 2010. His selection for the American National Team at the FILA Grappling Championship — a squad coached by Ricardo Liborio — underscored the recognition he had earned well beyond the 10th Planet ecosystem.

Throughout his career, Prokopos maintained a close working relationship with MMA standout Jake Shields, a partnership that sharpened his grappling at the highest levels of competition training. Competing in the featherweight division at 70kg/154lbs, he operated in one of the most athletically demanding weight classes in No-Gi grappling — a space where his technical creativity and unwavering commitment to the 10th Planet system distinguished him as a genuinely singular competitor of his generation.
