Cassia Moura

Cassia Moura was born on December 22, 2005, in Brazil, and began training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 2014 at the age of nine — making it her first and only sporting pursuit from the outset. Her path to the mats was shaped by the influence of her brother, Jesus Moura, and a circle of friends already immersed in the Gentle Art. The road wasn't without friction; Cassia's mother initially opposed the idea, concerned about the risk of injury. Undeterred, Cassia persisted until she earned her mother's approval — a small but defining act of determination that foreshadowed her competitive character.

Her first academy was Ypê Jiu-Jitsu, a local gym in Brazil led by Claudio Nascimento and operating under the supervision of Bruno Bastos. There, Moisés Júnior served as her first instructor, guiding her from the white belt through the yellow belt. Upon that promotion, Mikael Reis took over her development, steering her through the next stages of her competitive journey.

Under the guidance of Moisés Júnior and Mikael Reis, Cassia Moura built a formidable record at the juvenile level, steadily establishing herself as one of Brazil's most promising young competitors. The defining moment of her early career came at the 2021 CBJJ Brazilian National Championship, where she captured double gold — winning both the weight category and the absolute division in the juvenile bracket. That performance crystallized her ambition to pursue a professional career in jiu-jitsu.

She backed it up with sustained national-level dominance, claiming the Brazilian Nationals title again in 2022 and adding a gold medal at the 2022 CBJJ South American Championship. Her gym's pre-existing relationship with Bruno Bastos proved instrumental in turning that ambition into action. In 2023, Cassia leveraged that connection to transition to Bastos' training camp, Team LEAD, based in the United States — a decisive move toward full-time, professional competition under one of the most respected coaches in the BJJ community.

A Trajectory Without Modern Precedent

Cassia Moura arrived in the United States already regarded as one of Brazil's top prospects, but it was on North American soil that she achieved the kind of mainstream recognition rarely extended to athletes still climbing the belt ranks. Her ascent from blue belt to black belt, completed in approximately one year, stands as one of the most extraordinary progressions in the modern history of the sport.

The IBJJF enforces mandatory minimum time-in-belt requirements that regulate promotion timelines. One exception exists within those rules: an athlete who wins a World Championship gold medal at a given belt is exempt from the minimum time requirement for the subsequent promotion. Cassia exploited this provision at three consecutive belt levels — a feat with virtually no modern precedent.

Three World Titles, Three Immediate Promotions

In June 2023, she won the IBJJF World Championship in the gi as a blue belt at the 2023 IBJJF World Jiu-Jitsu Championship. Six months later, in December 2023, she captured the no-gi World Championship as a purple belt at the 2023 IBJJF World Jiu-Jitsu No-Gi Championship. In June 2024, she returned to the World stage and won gold as a brown belt in the gi at the 2024 IBJJF World Jiu-Jitsu Championship. Immediately following that victory, Bruno Bastos promoted her to black belt in a ceremony conducted on the podium of the IBJJF Mundial — a moment that captured the attention of the global BJJ community.

Consistent Dominance Between World Championships

Cassia's World Championship performances were not isolated peaks but reflections of sustained elite-level output. Between her title runs, she claimed gold at the 2024 IBJJF Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championship at brown belt and won the 2023 IBJJF Pan Jiu-Jitsu No-Gi Championship at purple belt, reinforcing the breadth and consistency of her competitive dominance across formats and belt levels.

Cassia Moura's transition to the black belt division produced immediate results at the highest level of competition. Later in 2024, she claimed gold at the IBJJF World No-Gi Championship as a black belt, demonstrating that her accelerated promotion had done nothing to diminish her edge against more experienced opponents. She further underscored her elite status by winning the IBJJF JJ CON in 2024, adding another major title to her résumé in her debut black belt year.

Moura competes in the Peso Pena division at 58.50 kg (129.0 lbs) and represents Brazil internationally under the Team LEAD banner, continuing to train under the direction of Bruno Bastos.
