About this video
Starting with the concept of the hand behind the knee to prevent pressure and control the opponent's leg to stop them from passing with a knee slice, maintain an active De La Riva hook turned inward, keeping the body tight and the knee close.
- Pull on the opponent's leg and attempt to reach for their back. If the opponent is heavy and breaks the grip, adjust your strategy.
- When the opponent leans forward, quickly switch tactics. Slide the De La Riva hook to their heel and sit up, chest to chest, with your head on their thigh to extend their leg.
- Embrace their leg as you prepare to rise. The leg that was high should be thrown back, with toes on the mat, to gain good traction when getting up.
- As you rise, apply pressure on their head. When they lift their leg, move to harvest half guard.
- Start with the same concept of the hand behind their knee, gripping your leg and placing a firm De La Riva hook to prevent them from passing or applying pressure on your abdomen.
- Lay your back on the mat, lift it off the ground, and keep your knee close to you. Keep your hand active to avoid hugging the head.
- Try to reach for the back and find the space needed. Kick and pull, but if they break your grip and posture up, it's unlikely you'll be able to spin. Use the moment they posture to switch.
- The hook that was on the leg slides to the heel. The leg that was on top is thrown back to gain strength to rise. Work with toes on the mat to gain more traction.
- Bring your chest to their knee and your head to their thigh. You must extend their leg to make them lose balance.
- Embrace their leg and use your hand on the ground with a tight elbow to prevent a Kimura. As you rise, pull your leg, apply pressure, and come over with your hand to win the scramble and secure half guard in a strong position.
