About this video

Active De La Riva (DLR) guard entry is demonstrated when an opponent attempts to pass the guard by pulling the legs down, defending against the DLR hook, and crossing their knee over. The following steps are outlined:

  1. As the opponent starts the guard pass, and it becomes clear that maintaining the DLR is no longer viable, immediately switch to a hip escape, turning inward.
  2. Embrace the opponent's leg, connect the hook, and ensure the free hand is ready to prevent the opponent from wrapping around the head.
  3. From the DLR guard, as the opponent stands to pass and attempts to defend against the DLR by crossing the knee, recognize when the DLR control is lost.
  4. Quickly perform a hip escape inward, using the hand that was on the heel to switch the knee and re-establish the DLR, keeping the opponent elevated.
  5. Defend against the opponent's hand that may come towards the head, maintaining control and preventing further guard passing attempts.
