About this video

Lapel Sweep variation when the opponent disengages from guard pass attempts:

  1. When the opponent backs away, causing you to lose all grips except for the lapel near you, secure the lapel with your left hand.
  2. Since the opponent's leg is too far to reach, place your leg between the lapel and their leg while pulling the lapel to bring their hip closer.
  3. Once their leg is within reach, pass the lapel to your hand. Preferably, grip the lapel with your palm facing up for better leg control and use your forearm to pull their leg towards you.
  4. Keep your leg high to assist in creating a pendulum motion. Kick with your calf against the lapel and tuck your knee inwards.
  5. Apply pressure behind their thigh with your forearm, continue kicking, and sit with your knee on their abdomen.
  6. Transition from holding the lapel to hugging the leg, switch the lapel grip to the head, kick their hip, invert your base, and fall into the center.
  7. If the opponent is only defending and has disengaged, maintain your inverted guard and high hips. Look for the lapel and secure it with your left hand.
  8. Place your leg between the lapel and their leg while pulling the lapel to bring their torso closer.
  9. With your free hand, grip the lapel palm-up and place it between your leg and hand.
  10. Execute the sweep by pushing your shin and calf against the lapel forward while pulling their leg towards you, ensuring the knee doesn't point outwards to maintain control.
  11. Continue the sweep forward without losing the grip, switch hands, slide, kick the hip, embrace the head, and land in control.
