About this video

Counter to the outside Ashi Garami involves maintaining knee position and executing a grip break sequence:

  1. Ensure your knee is outside the line of your ankle and hip. If not, use hand fighting or other means to adjust it.
  2. Pinch your knee against your opponent's hip to prevent them from spinning your leg.
  3. Take an arch grip on the opponent's foot, grabbing below the ball of the foot, big toe, and little toe, and push against their foot.
  4. Attempt a one-handed toe hold grip on the opponent's foot. If they boot their foot to prevent this, you can transition to an inverted heel hook.
  5. If the opponent turns their toes out to defend, you can pass their leg over the top while maintaining the knee pinch.
  6. Keep the arch grip throughout the sequence for safety, only releasing it at the very end.
  7. After passing the leg over, you have various options, including transitioning into your own outside Ashi Garami.
  8. Drill the sequence with your training partner, alternating roles to practice the grip break and counter.

This sequence emphasizes the importance of knee position and the arch grip for countering outside Ashi Garami and transitioning to offensive leg entanglements.
