Caio Terra Footlock
Submission
The Caio Terra Footlock is a straight ankle lock variation that uses a unique grip and body configuration to generate exceptional breaking pressure with minimal strength. It is applied from De La Riva guard bottom, capitalizing on the existing foot positioning to attack the ankle without relinquishing guard control.
Quick Reference
Key principles
- · The blade of the wrist is driven deep into the Achilles tendon with the finishing grip being a rear-naked-choke style figure-four rather than a traditional gable grip.
- · The hips are kept extremely close to the opponent's trapped leg, eliminating space that would allow them to pull free.
- · Breaking pressure comes from arching the hips upward and extending the body rather than cranking with the arms.
- · The outside leg maintains a De La Riva hook or hip control to prevent the opponent from stepping over or spinning out.
- · Pinching the knees tightly around the trapped leg prevents boot-pull escapes and knee-line clearance.
Execution
- 1 From De La Riva guard, release the collar or sleeve grip and secure the opponent's trapped foot against your chest, positioning the blade of your wrist under the Achilles tendon.
- 2 Thread your choking-side arm deep so the radial bone sits across the tendon, then close a figure-four grip (rear-naked-choke configuration) behind the foot.
- 3 Clamp your knees tightly together around the opponent's lower leg while keeping your DLR hook active to control their hip and prevent posturing or stacking.
- 4 Bridge your hips upward toward the ceiling while slightly angling your torso away from the trapped leg, creating a lever that hyperextends the ankle joint.
- 5 If the opponent attempts to roll or yank the foot free, follow their movement with your hips and maintain knee pressure to finish.
Common mistakes
- × Gripping too high on the foot near the toes instead of sinking the wrist blade deep into the Achilles, which disperses force and allows the opponent to tolerate the pressure.
- × Leaving space between your hips and the opponent's leg, enabling them to straighten their leg and escape the knee line.
- × Trying to finish by squeezing the arms instead of driving the hips upward, which wastes energy and produces insufficient breaking mechanics.
