Carol Brunacio

Caroline Brunacio Vinhaes was born in May 2002 in Grajaú, a neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro's Zona Norte region, Brazil. From an early age, she demonstrated a natural affinity for competitive sport, channeling her energy into Volleyball, Futsal, and Football throughout her childhood and early teenage years. Those formative experiences built the competitive mindset and work ethic that would later translate seamlessly onto the jiu-jitsu mats.

In 2018, Carol's active lifestyle came to an abrupt halt. The loss of two people close to her triggered a period of emotional withdrawal, and she stepped away from all physical activity. It was her mother who proved instrumental in guiding her through that difficult stretch — encouraging Carol to try a jiu-jitsu class as a means of emotional recovery. The suggestion carried added weight because her mother held a personal connection with local coach Julia Boscher, making the prospect of stepping into an unfamiliar training environment far less daunting for a grieving teenager.

Carol Brunacio took her first jiu-jitsu class in 2018 at a gym run by coaches Julia Boscher and Hugo Marques. The welcoming atmosphere and her mother's existing connection made the transition into the sport feel natural. Within a few weeks of training, Carol was already expressing a desire to compete. Her coaches encouraged patience, and approximately three months after she began, she stepped onto the competition mat for the first time. The experience left a lasting impression, and what had begun as a therapeutic outlet quickly became a genuine passion.

Her rapid development earned formal recognition in August 2019, when she received her blue belt. The trajectory of her training shifted when coach Hugo Marques relocated to the United States. In response, Julia Boscher aligned with GF Team, one of Rio de Janeiro's most prestigious training associations. Carol followed, and the move opened the door to a broad network of high-level coaches that would accelerate her growth considerably.

Integration into the GF Team network marked the beginning of a period of concentrated development for Carol Brunacio. Surrounded by elite coaches and high-caliber training partners within one of Brazil's most respected jiu-jitsu associations, she advanced through the colored belt ranks at a pace that reflected both her natural talent and her unwavering commitment to the sport.

The years spent competing as a blue belt built the foundation for what followed. In January 2023, Carol received her purple belt, and just five months later, in June 2023, Sergio Miranda of GFT MERCK promoted her directly to brown belt — a rapid double promotion that underscored her exceptional development. The culmination of this journey came on May 31, 2024, when Julio Cesar Pereira, the leader of GF Team, awarded Carol her black belt. From blue belt to black belt in roughly five years, her trajectory stands as a testament to the quality of her preparation and the strength of her competitive record across the colored belt divisions.

Carol Brunacio competes in the Featherweight division (129.00 lbs / approximately 58.5 kg) at all major IBJJF championships, and her record across three consecutive belt levels places her among the most consistent competitors of her generation.

Purple Belt: World Champion

The pinnacle of Carol's colored belt career arrived at the 2023 IBJJF World Championship, where she claimed the gold medal as a purple belt, establishing herself as one of the most dangerous athletes in the women's featherweight category. Her performance throughout the bracket demonstrated both technical maturity and composure under pressure — hallmarks of a competitor operating well ahead of her belt level.

Brown Belt: Silver and a Black Belt Transition

The momentum carried directly into her brown belt season. At the 2024 IBJJF World Championship, Brunacio advanced to the final and finished as runner-up — a result that confirmed her standing among the division's elite regardless of belt level. On May 31, 2024, Julio Cesar Pereira promoted her to black belt, and she stepped into the sport's highest competitive tier without missing a step.

Black Belt: Immediate Impact on the World Stage

Her first full season as a black belt produced further confirmation of her elite status. At the 2025 IBJJF World Championship, Carol again reached the final in the Adult Female Featherweight division, finishing as runner-up. Three consecutive podium finishes at the IBJJF World Championship — gold at purple, silver at brown, and silver at black — across three successive years paint the portrait of a competitor whose adaptability, durability, and competitive intelligence set her apart on the international stage.
