Tayane Porfírio de Araújo was born on December 11, 1994, in Sobral, in the northeastern Brazilian state of Ceará, and relocated to Rio de Janeiro at the age of two. She began training jiu-jitsu in 2010 at Equipe Márcio Rodrigues, taking her first steps in a sport that would come to define her life. She later moved to Brigadeiro Jiu-Jitsu, where she earned her purple belt and built the technical foundation that would make her one of the most formidable super-heavyweight competitors in women's grappling.

In 2014, Tayane made a pivotal move, joining Alliance in the Leblon neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro to train under black belt Alexandre Paiva. The partnership proved transformative. In June 2016, she received her black belt promotion on the podium of the IBJJF World Championship — a distinction that signaled not merely the completion of a rank but the arrival of a dominant force at the sport's elite tier.

Tayane announced herself to the international grappling community in emphatic fashion during the 2015 season. Competing as a purple belt, she swept the full IBJJF Grand Slam — the World Championship, the Pan American Championship, the European Open, and the Brazilian Nationals — winning gold in both her weight class and the absolute division at every stop. The achievement was extraordinary in its completeness, establishing her as arguably the most dominant female super-heavyweight of her generation before she had even reached black belt.

Her brown belt campaign in 2016 was no less commanding. She captured double gold at the UAEJJF Grand Slam events in both London and Rio de Janeiro, added European Open titles in weight and absolute, and claimed the Abu Dhabi World Pro in both divisions — demonstrating that her dominance extended across federations and formats. A third-place finish in the absolute division at the 2016 IBJJF World Championship was the lone blemish on an otherwise unbroken run of gold medals across two belt levels, and even that result came at an event where she earned gold in her weight division.

The transition to black belt brought no slowdown. In 2017, Tayane claimed the IBJJF World Championship in both weight and absolute divisions, added European Open double gold, won the Pan American Championship, and swept the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals in weight and absolute — a season of near-total dominance. She then defended her World titles in both divisions in 2018, bookending back-to-back European Open double golds to complete a historic consecutive double-double at the sport's premier event.

By the early months of 2018, Tayane had cemented her standing as the premier female super-heavyweight in the world. Her combination of size, technical sophistication, and competitive consistency across the IBJJF, UAEJJF, and international circuits placed her in a category largely her own. The question entering the summer of 2018 was not whether she would continue winning, but by how wide a margin.

The Suspension and Its Aftermath

What followed instead was the most devastating chapter of Tayane's career. On June 22, 2018, USADA imposed a provisional suspension after she tested positive for 19-norandrosterone (19-NA) and 19-noretiocholanolone, substances detected in a sample collected at the IBJJF World Championship on June 3, 2018. USADA subsequently issued a four-year ban, and all of her titles and results from that event were stripped.

Tayane maintained her innocence throughout the proceedings. As of May 2019, she accepted the ruling primarily because financial constraints made mounting a full legal challenge impossible — not because she conceded wrongdoing. The acceptance, she made clear, was a practical concession, not an admission.

The Human Cost

The toll on Tayane was severe. In a 2026 interview on the Grappling Monthly Podcast, she reflected on the psychological destruction that followed: "So, when that happened everything with me in 2018 about the doping and everything, so this is I think so destroyed me a lot, especially because I cannot to prove my innocence." She described the years that followed as a prolonged cycle of self-blame: "And I think so per 4 years I [felt like] it's my fault. All the time I say, 'Oh it's my fault, it's my fault because I believe in someone'. And for so many years. I put all the fault over to me."

At her lowest point, she gave away her gear and medals entirely: "Before I was thinking, oh, I cannot to come back anymore. I don't want this for my life anymore. You can imagine I give all my gears when this happened. So all my medals I put one bag and I say, I don't want this anymore." The ban contributed to a period of depression and significant weight gain, reaching 144 kg (318 lbs) at her heaviest. Separately, a ban from UAEJJF competition for exceeding the circuit's 90 kg weight limit compounded the competitive isolation she faced during this period.

Prior to the ban taking full effect, Tayane had been living in London conducting a seminar tour. The English capital became an unexpected refuge. Lúcio "Lagarto" Rodrigues and the staff at Gracie Barra Fulham in South West London extended support that proved pivotal during a period when institutional backing in Brazil had largely evaporated. She officially joined Gracie Barra and settled at the Fulham school, drawn by her personal connection to the city and the absence of meaningful financial support back home.

By May 2019, Tayane had returned to training and teaching at Gracie Barra Fulham and secured legal assistance to pursue her doping case. The London period served as a stabilizing environment — one that offered structure, community, and purpose at a time when her professional identity had been stripped away. Throughout this stretch, she remained vocal on issues of equal pay and athlete welfare in BJJ, using her platform even while suspended to advocate for conditions she believed the sport owed its athletes.

A New Motivation

The catalyst for Tayane's return to competition was not a training milestone or a competitive invitation but pregnancy. Becoming a mother reoriented her relationship to the sport entirely. In the 2026 Grappling Monthly Podcast interview, she described the transformation in visceral terms: "I was pregnant and everything changed on me. I feel like a phoenix. Everything what I do now it's for me and for her. Because when she grow, she can see how strong I am."

Return to the Elite

She relocated to Huntington Beach, California, and returned to competition under the Alliance banner. On April 26, 2025, she stepped onto the mat at BJJ Stars 15 for the absolute title, facing Gabrieli Pessanha — the dominant force in women's super-heavyweight grappling. Tayane lost by submission, but the match confirmed what her supporters had argued: that her competitive level had not diminished and that she belonged among the sport's elite.

What followed later in 2025 made that case emphatically. At the IBJJF Brazilian Nationals, Tayane produced one of the most stunning upsets in recent women's BJJ history, defeating Gabrieli Pessanha 4-2 to claim the gold medal and end Pessanha's 164-plus match winning streak. The victory reverberated across the grappling world, validating her comeback narrative and demonstrating that her years away from competition had not eroded the competitive edge that had made her a World champion.

On July 8, 2026, USADA provisionally suspended Tayane following a positive test for Carboxy-THC, a cannabis metabolite, detected in an in-competition sample collected at the 2026 IBJJF World Championship on May 31, 2026. USADA determined that the cannabis use had occurred out of competition and was unrelated to athletic performance. On that basis, she qualified for a reduced three-month period of ineligibility, with the possibility of a further reduction to one month upon completion of a USADA-approved treatment program. All results, medals, points, and prizes from the May 31, 2026 event were disqualified.

The sanction marked her second anti-doping rule violation within roughly a decade, prompting renewed discussion about anti-doping policy, proportionality, and athlete welfare across the grappling community. Observers widely noted the markedly different character of the two cases: the 2018 violation involved an allegation of a performance-enhancing anabolic substance, while the 2026 case centered on a recreational cannabis metabolite that USADA itself determined carried no performance-related intent.
