Claire North

Claire North was born on February 1, 1993, in Des Moines, Iowa. Her formative years were defined by competitive soccer, a sport she pursued from kindergarten through high school that instilled the athletic discipline and drive she would later channel into martial arts.

Even as a high school athlete, North was drawn to the mechanics of grappling, harboring an interest in joining the wrestling team. Social pressure kept her off the mats in that setting — a barrier that delayed, but never derailed, her path to the sport. At 18, she relocated to Iowa City to study at the University of Iowa, where a pivotal incident at a country club prompted her to take self-defense seriously. That moment set her directly on course toward Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

From her first day on the mats, Claire North trained under John Gutta — a relationship that would shape every dimension of her development in the sport. Her progression through the belt ranks was defined by a consistent and ambitious competitive presence at the highest levels of IBJJF competition.

At purple belt, she earned a podium finish at the 2016 IBJJF Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championship, signaling that her ambitions extended well beyond the local scene. As a brown belt, she continued testing herself against the world's best, reaching the final of the IBJJF World Championship in 2018 and claiming a silver medal — a result that made her readiness for the black belt division unmistakable. The following year, she captured gold at the 2019 IBJJF American Nationals in the no-gi format, adding a title to an already distinguished colored belt résumé.

On December 19, 2019, John Gutta promoted North to black belt, a milestone that carried significance well beyond her individual achievement. With that promotion, she became the first female black belt from the state of Iowa — a historic marker for the growth of jiu-jitsu in the region. Her relationship with Gutta extended beyond the coach-athlete dynamic; the two married, making their shared BJJ lineage a cornerstone of both their personal and professional lives. North represents both Tipping Point BJJ and TAC Team on the international competition circuit.

Claire North's story is as much about discipline and time management as it is about technical mastery. Alongside John Gutta, she co-founded Tipping Point BJJ in Cedar Rapids, Iowa — an academy that has played a meaningful role in expanding the jiu-jitsu community across a state where the sport's roots are still taking hold.

While building the academy, North maintained full-time employment in the pharmacy industry and pursued academic studies in engineering simultaneously. That combination would be considered demanding even without elite-level competition demands. Yet her results on the mat during this period ranked among the strongest of her career. In 2020, she reached the final of the IBJJF Pan Championship. In 2021, she earned a bronze medal at the IBJJF World Championship and added further podium finishes at the IBJJF Pan Championship and two IBJJF American Nationals events, including a silver medal in the no-gi division.

North's trajectory stands as a compelling model for practitioners navigating high-level competition alongside demanding professional and academic lives — proof that elite jiu-jitsu is not exclusively the domain of full-time competitors, but can be achieved through exceptional discipline and an unwavering sense of purpose.
