Victor Genovesi

Victor "Vitinho" Genovesi was born on March 11, 1991, in Brazil, into a household defined by elite athletic achievement. His mother, Dani Figueiredo, is an accomplished marathon runner, while his father, Alexandre Paiva, stands among the most respected and decorated coaches in BJJ history. Raised at the intersection of endurance sport and martial arts, Victor absorbed a competitive culture from his earliest years.

His introduction to Jiu-Jitsu came remarkably early — at just 3 years old, Victor began training at the Strike academy under Muzio de Angelis and later Alexandre Puga. That foundation built the technical framework for a distinguished competitive career. Like many young combat sports athletes, Victor briefly explored Judo before returning to Jiu-Jitsu — this time under the direct guidance of his father. That return to the gentle art would prove decisive.

Victor's progression through the belt ranks reflected both the caliber of his instruction and his own relentless competitive drive. Competing under the Alliance banner — one of the most storied teams in BJJ history — he accumulated significant results long before reaching black belt.

At purple belt, he captured the CBJJ Brasileiro No Gi title in 2010, announcing his emergence as a serious national-level competitor. His brown belt years proved particularly prolific: in 2011, he claimed gold at the IBJJF European Open, and in 2012 he reached the pinnacle of colored belt competition by becoming an IBJJF World Champion at brown belt — one of the most prestigious titles a pre-black belt athlete can earn. He capped his brown belt career with the IBJJF Brasileiro Championship in 2013, cementing his standing as one of the top prospects in his division.

On August 22, 2013, Victor Genovesi received his black belt, a milestone that formalized years of dedicated training and competitive excellence under his father's guidance at Alliance.

Victor's black belt journey has been defined not only by competitive ambition but by a remarkable capacity to endure and overcome serious physical adversity. A significant stomach disease required multiple surgeries, placing his athletic career in jeopardy at a critical stage of his development. The physical toll of those procedures would have permanently derailed many competitors.

Compounding those challenges, Victor also sustained a serious wrist injury that kept him sidelined for more than a year. For an athlete whose identity is rooted in high-level physical performance, such an extended absence carries as much psychological weight as physical. His ability to return to competition at major IBJJF and CBJJ events speaks to a resilience shaped, in part, by growing up in a family where elite athletic perseverance was a baseline expectation.

A third-place finish at the IBJJF Pan Championship in 2017 stands as one of the most meaningful results of his black belt career — not merely as a podium placement, but as proof that his competitive edge remained sharp after years of physical setbacks.
