Alexandre Paiva was born on March 4, 1967, in Brazil, and went on to become one of the most consequential figures in the history of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. His journey began in 1983 when he stepped onto the mats at the renowned Jacaré Academy in Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro, training under Romero Cavalcanti — the man who would later become his co-founder at Alliance. The academy served as a crucible of talent during this era, and Paiva trained alongside future BJJ luminaries including Fabio Gurgel and Roberto Traven, forging bonds and rivalries that would shape the sport for decades.

In 1988, a serious back injury forced Paiva away from the mats for two full years. He earned his black belt from Romero Cavalcanti in 1991 — marking the close of his foundational years as a student and the opening of an entirely new chapter.

In 1992, he opened Academia Strike, establishing himself as an instructor and laying the organizational groundwork for something far greater. In 1996, he claimed gold at the Pan American Championship, announcing himself as one of the elite competitors of his generation. The following year, at the 1997 IBJJF World Championship, he earned a bronze medal that underscored his consistency at the sport's highest level.

The pinnacle of his competitive career arrived in 1999 when Paiva captured the IBJJF World Championship gold medal — cementing his status as a world-class fighter, not merely a world-class builder of fighters.
