In 1995, he watched recordings of the first two Ultimate Fighting Championship events and found himself transfixed by Royce Gracie's ability to neutralise and submit larger, more physically imposing opponents. That combination of leverage, technique, and calm under pressure left a lasting impression on the young Frenchman, setting in motion a lifelong commitment to the art.

The passion ignited by those early UFC recordings drove Olivier to pursue direct contact with its source. In June 1996, he attended a seminar in Paris led by Royce Gracie and Rorion Gracie, an experience that deepened his understanding of BJJ and solidified his desire to train seriously. Recognising that reaching the highest levels of competition required exposure to the world's best training environments, Olivier travelled to Brazil in 2006. There he trained alongside Rico Vieira and Rodrigo Comprido, immersing himself in a competitive culture that set the global standard for BJJ. That experience marked a pivotal step in his development, bridging the gap between European and South American BJJ and preparing him for the international stage. He was part of a generation of French practitioners who understood that seeking elite training abroad was not an indulgence but a necessity for those with serious competitive ambitions.

Thibaut Olivier's impact on French BJJ is inseparable from the story of his family. One of three brothers who earned considerable respect within the French and broader European BJJ community, the Olivier name became synonymous with technical excellence and competitive commitment. That collective involvement gave their shared project — the founding of Gokudo academy in France — a depth of expertise and credibility that extended well beyond any single individual.

Gokudo developed into a serious centre for BJJ in France, and its affiliation with Checkmat connected its members to one of the most competitive and internationally recognised teams in the sport. The Checkmat affiliation granted Gokudo practitioners access to a global network of elite training partners and coaches, raising the ceiling for what French competitors could aspire to achieve. Through the academy, the Olivier brothers contributed directly to the grassroots infrastructure the sport needed to grow in France — creating an environment where serious practitioners could train, compete, and develop at a high level without necessarily leaving the country.

A Historic Podium Finish

The defining competitive milestone of Thibaut Olivier's career came in 2009, when he became the first French competitor to reach the podium at the IBJJF European Open in the adult black belt male division, earning a bronze medal. That achievement was more than a personal triumph — it marked a moment of recognition for French BJJ on the international competitive calendar, signalling that practitioners from France could stand alongside the world's elite at the sport's highest organisational level.

A Sustained Record of Elite Performance

From that foundation, Olivier built a career of consistent high-level performance across multiple platforms and years. He claimed the Abu Dhabi Europe Trials London title in 2010 and added the Spirit Challenge Pro Championship in 2011. In 2012, he won both the NAGA Europe Championship and the French Nationals at black belt adult level. His reach extended beyond Europe with a third-place finish at the IBJJF Asian Open in 2013. A runner-up finish at the French Nationals followed in 2014, before he claimed back-to-back French Nationals titles in 2015 and 2016, also winning the CFJJB Pro League and JUST JJB championships during that same period. What makes this body of work particularly notable is that Olivier continued to compete in the adult division past the age of 40, demonstrating a level of physical conditioning and technical sharpness that few practitioners maintain at that stage of their careers.
