Thomas Lisboa

Thomas Lisboa was born on March 6, 1988, in Taubaté, São Paulo, Brazil, into a household that placed a high value on sport and physical activity. His mother's enthusiasm for athletics led him to explore soccer, karate, capoeira, judo, and skateboarding during his formative years. It was judo that first ignited his competitive fire, drawn as he was to the challenge of testing himself directly against opponents on the mat. Yet judo's rigid ruleset ultimately felt too constraining for his ambitions, leaving him searching for a more expressive competitive outlet.

At 16, a pivotal introduction changed his trajectory. Through the influence of his friend Gabriel Gomes, Lisboa discovered Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and began training at the Alliance Jiu Jitsu affiliate in Taubaté in 2004 — the first steps in a discipline that would come to define his athletic life.

Lisboa's early development at the Taubaté affiliate was made possible in significant part by the support of Alex Monsalve and Daniel 'Cabelo' Nogueira, who covered his training costs and invested in his growth as a competitor. As a blue belt, Lisboa regularly traveled to São Paulo alongside coach 'Cabelo' and his brother Edu Lisboa to train under Fábio Gurgel at the Alliance Jiu Jitsu headquarters, deepening his connection to the team's technical culture and competitive standards.

That investment paid early dividends on the competition circuit. As a blue belt, Lisboa contributed to Alliance Jiu Jitsu's CBJJ Brazilian Team National Championship victory in 2008. He went on to build one of the most decorated colored belt records of his era, claiming IBJJF World Championship gold at purple belt in 2010 and again at brown belt in 2012, along with the IBJJF South American Championship at brown belt. Consistent performances across multiple Brazilian Nationals and No-Gi events further established him as among the most accomplished competitors in his division before reaching black belt.

On December 15, 2012, Fábio Gurgel promoted Thomas Lisboa to black belt — a recognition of nearly a decade of dedicated work within the Alliance Jiu Jitsu system.

As a black belt, Thomas Lisboa quickly established himself as one of the standout light featherweight competitors of his generation, competing in the Peso Pluma division at 64 kg / 141.5 lbs. His transition to the black belt ranks carried immediate international impact, with a silver medal at the IBJJF World No-Gi Championship in 2014 signaling his readiness to compete at the sport's highest level.

The defining achievement of Lisboa's black belt career arrived in 2015 when he claimed the IBJJF No-Gi World Championship title, cementing his reputation as a world-class light featherweight. His no-gi record across this period was consistently elite, with additional podium finishes at the IBJJF World No-Gi Championship in both 2015 and 2016, and the Finnish No-Gi Open title in 2013. His gi competition was equally competitive, yielding podium appearances at the IBJJF European Open, IBJJF Pan American Championship, and multiple CBJJ Brazilian National events throughout his black belt years.

In 2017, Lisboa put together a particularly dominant stretch on the Brazilian open circuit, capturing gold at the IBJJF Rio Fall Open, the IBJJF Floripa Open and its No-Gi counterpart, and both the IBJJF Belo-Horizonte Open and Belo-Horizonte No-Gi Open — a run that underscored his durability and sustained competitive drive at the elite level.

Alongside his competitive career, Thomas Lisboa built a parallel identity as a coach within the Alliance Jiu Jitsu organization and beyond. He spent six months in New York training and coaching at Marcelo Garcia's renowned academy, an experience that broadened his technical perspective and immersed him in one of the most influential training environments in the sport.

Returning to São Paulo, Lisboa took on coaching responsibilities at the Alliance Jiu Jitsu headquarters and at the team's Moema location. His 2015 IBJJF No-Gi World Championship title served as the catalyst for the next chapter of his career: on the strength of that result, he received an invitation to join the coaching staff at the Alliance Jiu Jitsu gym in Vancouver, Canada, where he became an official instructor. His move to Vancouver extended Alliance Jiu Jitsu's footprint in North America and reflected the organization's confidence in Lisboa as both a competitor and a standard-bearer of its values. His career arc — from a teenager training at a regional affiliate in Taubaté to an instructor shaping the next generation of competitors on two continents — stands as a testament to the depth of his commitment to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
