Gabriel Moraes

Gabriel Moraes — widely known by his nickname Gabrielzinho — began training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at the age of 15 in his hometown of Manaus, Amazonas, a city far removed from the traditional BJJ powerhouses of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Under the instruction of the Monteiro Brothers at Academia Monteiro, one of the most respected academies in the Amazonas region, his natural aptitude for the sport became apparent almost immediately.

Moraes wasted little time establishing himself as a standout competitor at the lower belt levels. In 2002, he claimed his first IBJJF World Championship title as a blue belt in a closed bracket alongside Fernando Vieira. He returned the following year to win the 2003 IBJJF World Championship outright — becoming the first and only competitor in tournament history to win consecutive world titles at the blue belt rank. Promoted to purple belt on the strength of those results, Moraes kept his momentum intact by capturing the Brazilian National Championship at that grade as well.

Despite his historic run, Moraes faced a stark reality after winning the purple belt national championship: without sponsorship or a sustainable path forward, he came close to walking away from competition entirely. The turning point arrived back in Manaus, when his longtime coach Augusto "Guto" Monteiro awarded him a direct promotion from purple to black belt — bypassing the brown belt altogether. While uncommon, such accelerated promotions carry precedent in BJJ, having occurred previously in the careers of Sergio Penha and Fredson Paixao.

The black belt opened doors that had remained closed. Through the tireless advocacy of Carlos Vieira Holanda — a close supporter who had traveled alongside Moraes across Brazil and championed his cause throughout — sponsorship materialized for the first time, allowing Moraes to remain in the sport at the highest level. In 2004, months after receiving his black belt, he won the 2004 IBJJF World Championship in the Peso Galo (58kg/126lbs) division. Having claimed consecutive IBJJF World titles as a blue belt in 2002 and 2003, then adding a black belt world title in 2004 while skipping two belt levels in the promotion process, Moraes carved out a place in BJJ history that no competitor has since approached.

The role of Carlos Vieira Holanda in shaping Moraes' career extended well beyond advocacy and travel support. Holanda introduced Moraes to Ricardo Vieira and the Checkmat organization, connecting him with a competitive home that would anchor his career for the better part of a decade. Training under the Checkmat banner during his trips to Rio de Janeiro, Moraes represented the team in competition through 2015 and benefited from one of the sport's most demanding training environments.

His early dominance proved no aberration. Moraes reached the IBJJF World Championship final in 2005 as a black belt, then returned more than a decade after his first title to claim a fourth world championship at the 2013 IBJJF World Championship. As late as 2016, he competed at elite level, finishing as runner-up at the Pan American Championship. Among the notable results of his career, Moraes submitted Caio Terra in competition — placing him among a very select group of competitors to have accomplished that feat.

Gabriel Moraes' legacy rests on a rare combination of historic early achievement and sustained long-term excellence in one of the sport's most technically demanding divisions. Competing throughout his career in the Peso Galo (58kg/126lbs) category, he accumulated four IBJJF World Championship titles across a competitive span exceeding a decade — a testament to both his technical depth and his enduring commitment to the sport.

What makes his record truly singular is the manner in which those titles were won. No other competitor in IBJJF World Championship history has held consecutive world titles straddling the blue and black belt grades, let alone done so while skipping two belt levels in the promotion process. His journey from the mats of Manaus — a city not historically associated with elite-level BJJ — to the pinnacle of the sport speaks to the expanding reach of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu beyond its traditional geographic strongholds. Gabrielzinho Moraes stands as proof that exceptional talent, the right mentorship, and the determination to persist through adversity can produce one of the sport's most extraordinary careers.
