Thiago Abreu

Thiago Abreu was born on May 2, 1983, in Santos, on the coast of São Paulo, Brazil — a city that would shape his path in Brazilian jiu-jitsu in more ways than one. Unlike many elite-level competitors who take their first steps on the mats during their teenage years, Abreu did not begin training until age 21, making his later achievements all the more remarkable.

Despite a genuine interest in martial arts throughout his earlier years, Abreu had never found the opportunity to walk into a combat sports gym. That changed through the influence of Ingmar Santos, a local instructor who recognized Abreu's enthusiasm and made it his mission to get him on the mats. After some persistent persuasion, Santos convinced Abreu to attend one of his classes at Integração Jiu-Jitsu in Santos — an academy with a distinguished coaching lineage that included Ingmar Santos, Rodrigo Cavaca, and Teco Shinzato.

Abreu's very first class proved to be a defining moment. Paired in sparring with a smaller training partner, Roger Clavijo — a blue belt at the time — Abreu was thoroughly dominated. Rather than walking away discouraged, that humbling introduction only deepened his resolve. He left that first session with an unshakeable determination to master the art.

Thiago Abreu's path through the belt ranks was shaped by both loyalty and circumstance. Ingmar Santos awarded Abreu his blue belt at Integração Jiu-Jitsu, recognizing his early development at the Santos academy. For a period, Abreu trained at his university campus at FEFIS (Faculdade de Educação Física de Santos), maintaining his practice while balancing academic commitments.

The landscape at Integração soon shifted significantly. Ingmar Santos and Rodrigo Cavaca departed the academy and joined Brasa Clube de Jiu-Jitsu, where they established a new training environment. When Abreu sought to reconnect with his original coaches, he found that Santos had relocated to a different city — a transition that placed Rodrigo Cavaca at the center of his development. Cavaca took full ownership of his student's progression through the upper belts, guiding Abreu through his purple and brown belt stages before awarding him the black belt on July 6, 2010. That milestone formalized a coaching relationship built on continuity and trust. Abreu went on to represent Checkmat in competition, carrying forward the lineage Cavaca had helped establish.

Breakout Success and World-Class Consistency

Thiago Abreu built his competitive reputation above all as a no-gi specialist, demonstrating a rare ability to perform at the highest level across multiple belt ranks and across many years of elite competition. His breakout moment came at the 2009 World No-Gi Championship, where he captured gold in both the weight division and the absolute as a brown belt — a double that announced him as one of the most dangerous lightweight grapplers in the world without the gi.

Competing in the Peso Leve division at 76kg/167lbs, Abreu returned to the top of the podium at the black belt level when he claimed the World No-Gi Championship title again in 2014, proving his earlier success was no anomaly. His sustained presence among the world's best remained a defining feature of his career: a runner-up finish in 2011 and a third-place result in 2015 reflected the kind of consistent elite performance that separates true champions from one-time contenders.

Versatility Across Both Formats

Abreu's competitive range extended into gi competition as well. At the 2012 IBJJF World Championship, he earned a third-place finish, demonstrating technical versatility across both formats of the sport. Earlier in his career, he had claimed the Brazilian National Championship title in 2009 as a purple belt, along with multiple São Paulo Open titles in 2014 and 2015, and the São Paulo No-Gi Open in 2015 — results that reinforced his dominance on both the national and international stages.

Thiago Abreu's contribution to Brazilian jiu-jitsu extended beyond competition when, in 2012, he co-founded his own academy alongside friend and training partner Gabriel Rollo. The school took root in the Santos and São Paulo coastal region — the same territory where Abreu had first discovered the sport — and grew steadily to encompass multiple affiliate locations.
