Gabriel Rollo

Gabriel Rollo was born on October 3, 1986, in Santos, São Paulo, Brazil, and came to Brazilian jiu-jitsu later than many of his peers, beginning his training at the age of 18. His introduction to the sport came not through a formal program or family tradition, but through the encouragement of a close friend named Kaue — a single relationship that set Rollo on a competitive path he would follow for decades.

His first coach, Paulo Theodoro, guided the young practitioner from Santos through the early belt ranks, eventually awarding him his purple belt. That mentorship came to a tragic end in 2007, when Paulo Theodoro was murdered — a loss that marked a deeply personal turning point in Rollo's journey both on and off the mats.

In the aftermath of losing his first mentor, Gabriel Rollo sought a new training environment and found his home under Rodrigo Cavaca. Cavaca's academy provided the technical foundation and competitive culture Rollo needed to continue his development, and it was there that he earned both his brown and black belts, forging a long-term mentorship that would define his identity as a competitor.

Through his affiliation with Checkmat — one of Brazil's most competitive and internationally recognized jiu-jitsu organizations — Rollo rose to prominence as one of the top lightweight competitors of his generation. Competing in the Peso Leve division at 76kg/167lbs, he became as recognizable for his lean, wiry frame as for his results on the competition circuit. His nickname, "Palito" — a Brazilian Portuguese term reflecting his slender build — became synonymous with a sharp, technically refined game that opponents learned to respect.

Brown Belt Promise and Black Belt Breakthrough

Rollo's potential surfaced early when he reached the final of the IBJJF World Championship at brown belt in 2010 — a result that foreshadowed the international-level competitor he would become. At black belt, his 2014 campaign marked a decisive step forward, with gold medal performances at the IBJJF South American Championship and the IBJJF São Paulo Open establishing him as a dominant force in the regional and continental lightweight landscape.
