Born on September 2, 1995, in Costa Rica, Sebastian Rodriguez built his athletic identity long before he ever stepped onto a jiu-jitsu mat. His introduction to competitive sport began organically — as a toddler, accompanying his father to a local boxing gym. That early immersion in gym culture planted the seeds of a lifelong connection to combat sports and physical discipline.

At age 6, Rodriguez formalized his martial arts journey by taking up both boxing and karate simultaneously. His commitment to karate was particularly striking — he earned a brown belt by the age of 12, a testament to the competitive mindset and physical awareness he was already developing. These disciplines laid a technical foundation that would inform every athletic chapter that followed.

Despite his grounding in martial arts, Rodriguez's teenage years saw him pivot toward soccer — known outside North America as football — where he competed at a genuinely elite level. During his mid-teens, he represented Deportivo Saprissa, one of Costa Rica's most storied and successful football clubs. Performing within a professional sporting structure, with all the pressure and discipline it demands, added another formative layer to an already exceptional athletic background.

Martial arts re-entered Rodriguez's life as a consistent practice in January 2013, when a friend invited him to try a jiu-jitsu class at the age of 17. The experience was immediately transformative. He fell in love with the sport from that very first session and became a dedicated student of instructor André Oliveira in Costa Rica, training with purpose from that point forward.

Competition became a natural extension of his training, and Rodriguez steadily built a strong résumé on the local circuit. His ambitions, however, extended far beyond regional medals. In 2016, Rodriguez got his first taste of truly elite-level competition at the IBJJF World Championships. An early-round loss proved pivotal — not a discouragement, but a clear signal. He recognized that to compete seriously at the top of the grappling world, he needed a more professional training environment.

With that clarity of purpose, Rodriguez began researching elite teams in the United States. He reached out to well-known coaches including Lloyd Irvin and Clark Gracie, seeking full scholarships and lodging that would enable the move. Those initial requests did not yield immediate results, but Rodriguez remained determined. He devised a plan to travel to New York City, where a friend could provide lodging, allowing him to sample gyms across the area while keeping costs manageable.

That plan changed after a single training session. Rodriguez visited Unity Jiu-Jitsu and was immediately struck by the intensity of the environment and the sheer talent level on the mats. One session was enough. He committed to Unity Jiu-Jitsu without hesitation and began training under head coach Murilo Santana, arriving at the academy as a purple belt.

Sebastian Rodriguez's progression through the upper belt ranks unfolded entirely under the guidance of Murilo Santana at Unity Jiu-Jitsu. Having earned his purple belt under André Oliveira in Costa Rica, Rodriguez arrived in New York with a solid technical foundation — one that Unity Jiu-Jitsu's demanding training environment would sharpen considerably.

Both his brown and black belt promotions came directly from Murilo Santana, reflecting the deep trust and sustained growth that defined Rodriguez's time at the academy. His black belt was awarded in a formal ceremony on May 23, 2021 — a milestone representing not just technical achievement, but the culmination of years of sacrifice, relocation, and relentless competition.

The trajectory from purple to black belt was anything but quiet. Rodriguez competed aggressively on the international circuit throughout his colored belt years, accumulating major titles across both Gi and No-Gi formats in the sport's most prestigious tournaments. Competing in the Meio Pesado division (88.30 kg / 195.0 lbs), he established himself as one of the most formidable colored belt competitors in the world — making his eventual promotion feel both well-earned and perfectly timed.

Purple and Brown Belt: Building an Elite Résumé

As a purple belt, Rodriguez announced himself on the international stage with a series of dominant results in 2018 and 2019. He claimed gold at the 2019 IBJJF European Open No-Gi, won the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals No-Gi, and captured the ACB World Championship title — all in the same calendar year. He also reached the finals of the AJP Abu Dhabi World Pro in 2019, demonstrating the versatility to perform across different rulesets and competitive environments. His No-Gi performances were a particular strength during this period, earning him bronze at the IBJJF World Championships No-Gi in both 2018 as a purple belt and 2019 as a brown belt.

The brown belt chapter of Rodriguez's career, concentrated largely in 2021, was equally prolific. He swept the IBJJF Pan Championship in both Gi and No-Gi formats, claimed gold at the American Nationals in both formats, and reached the finals of the AJP Abu Dhabi World Pro for the second time. In 2022, Rodriguez delivered two of the most significant results of his career: gold at the IBJJF Pan Championship in the Gi and gold at the IBJJF World Championship in No-Gi — the latter representing the sport's most prestigious No-Gi title.
