Lucas Alves

Born on July 23, 1993, in São Paulo, Brazil, Lucas Alves built his early athletic identity through football (soccer), competing from childhood through the age of 15. That foundation of discipline and physical conditioning would later translate directly to his performance on the mats. During his pre-teen years, he also trained capoeira — developing the body awareness and fluid movement that would complement his eventual martial arts career.

The transition to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu came in 2007, when Lucas was 14, and it began as a shared pursuit. Both he and his father had long admired the effectiveness of BJJ in mixed martial arts, and that mutual enthusiasm led them to sign up for class together on the same day. Their first instructor was David de Souza, a local black belt affiliated with Luiz Guilherme of the Guigo JJ Academy. Under de Souza's guidance, Alves earned his green belt before recognizing the need for a higher-level training environment to match his competitive ambitions.

By the end of 2008, Lucas Alves made a defining move — joining the gym of Luciano Nucci, widely known as "Mestre Casquinha," one of the most respected coaches within the Alliance association. The shift placed him inside a high-performance environment that aligned with his growing ambitions, and it was under Casquinha's guidance that Alves committed to pursuing BJJ professionally — a decision he made while still competing at the purple belt level.

A Multi-Coach Development Model

As his game matured, Alves expanded his training to include regular sessions at Alliance headquarters, working alongside Fábio Gurgel and Michael Langhi. Rather than locking into a single coach or facility, he cultivated a collaborative structure — dividing his time between Casquinha's gym and Alliance HQ throughout his brown belt years. This approach, rare in both its depth and consistency, shaped Alves into a technically well-rounded and tactically mature competitor.

In July 2019, that collective investment reached its milestone: Luciano Nucci, Michael Langhi, and Fábio Gurgel promoted Lucas Alves to the rank of black belt together — a ceremony that reflected the shared role each mentor played in his development. Alves competes in the Meio Pesado division (88.30 kg / 195.0 lbs).

Receiving his black belt in July 2019, Lucas Alves moved quickly to establish himself at the sport's highest competitive level. In the months that followed his promotion, he assembled one of the most productive debut black belt seasons in recent Alliance history — winning titles across both Gi and No-Gi formats on national and international stages.

Gold Medal Performances Across Formats

Among his standout results was a gold medal at the 2019 IBJJF European Open No-Gi, a performance that announced his ability to compete against elite international opposition as a brand-new black belt. Back in Brazil, Alves captured double gold at the IBJJF São Paulo Open, claiming titles in both the Gi and No-Gi divisions on home soil. He repeated that feat at the 2019 IBJJF Floripa Winter Open and the 2019 IBJJF Belo Horizonte Winter Open, sweeping both formats at each event. He also reached the podium at the IBJJF South American No-Gi Championship with a silver medal and earned bronze at the IBJJF Brazilian Nationals No-Gi — results that underscored his consistency across the circuit's most demanding competitions.

A Trajectory Built at the Colored Belts

Alves' 2019 breakout did not arrive without precedent. At purple belt in 2015, he earned a third-place finish at the IBJJF Brazilian Nationals — an early indicator of his capacity to perform on the biggest stages. At brown belt, he returned to that same podium in 2018 in both the Gi and No-Gi formats, and added a third-place finish at the IBJJF South Brazilian Championship in 2017. Each result marked a step in a deliberate, cumulative progression. The dominant black belt season that followed reflected the full weight of years spent developing under Luciano Nucci, Michael Langhi, and Fábio Gurgel within the Alliance system.
