Roiter Lima

Roiter Lima was born on November 3, 1999, in Fortaleza, Ceará, Brazil, and relocated to the neighboring town of Pindoretama at the age of four, where he spent his formative years. Growing up, Lima harbored serious ambitions of becoming a professional football player, competing in futsal well into his early-to-mid teens — a pursuit that forged the athleticism and competitive drive he would later channel onto the mats.

His path to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was carved through family. In 2012, his older brother, Helter Lima, began training under their uncle, Rosier Lima, a BJJ black belt based in the region. Watching his brother's enthusiasm grow, a 13-year-old Roiter stepped onto the mats shortly after. The brothers trained recreationally at first, with no immediate competitive ambitions — but that shifted in 2013 when Helter entered the tournament circuit and began posting results. Inspired, Roiter embraced competition with equal commitment, a decision that would define the entire arc of his athletic career.

As Lima's dedication deepened, so did the scope of his ambitions. At 15 years old and already a blue belt, he relocated to Fortaleza — a city where the sport was flourishing — to pursue full-time training at the prominent Gigueto gym, home of the MG Team. Throughout this transition, Lima maintained his close training relationship with his uncle and longtime mentor, Rosier Lima, ensuring continuity in his technical development.

After two years of immersive full-time training in Fortaleza, Lima received a transformative invitation: a spot on the Cassão Team, a Gracie Barra affiliate based in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, led by head instructor Cássio Francis. The move carried the full endorsement of Rosier Lima, whose support reflected the family-rooted foundation that had guided Roiter from his earliest days on the mats.

Under Cássio Francis's guidance, Lima's competitive trajectory accelerated sharply. His purple belt campaign culminated at the 2019 AJP World Pro Championship, where he claimed the gold medal — a landmark result that announced him as a genuine international talent and opened doors to the sport's highest levels.

Lima's decorated run through the colored belt ranks earned him recognition at the organizational level. In 2020, his exceptional competitive results secured him one of only four available spots in Gracie Barra's prestigious Ambassadors Program — a scholarship initiative providing full sponsorship for the team's top international talents, enabling them to train and compete in the United States, where the sport's most significant events are held.

While based in the US under the program, Lima accepted a coaching position at Gracie Barra Arizona, a gym owned by Flávio Almeida. The role reflected not only his standing as an elite competitor but also his emergence as a credible instructor capable of shaping the development of others. The dual identity of high-level athlete and BJJ coach became a defining characteristic of this chapter in his career.

In November 2020, Lima's journey through the belt system reached a milestone when Cássio Francis and Lucas Silva, the head instructors of the Cassão Team, promoted him to black belt — a recognition of both his competitive achievements and the depth of his technical foundation.

Immediate Impact at the Elite Level

Lima wasted little time establishing himself at the black belt level. In 2021, he claimed gold at the AJP Grand Slam Miami, demonstrating an immediate and seamless transition to the sport's elite tier. That same year, he reached the final of the IBJJF World Championship No-Gi and the IBJJF Pan Championship No-Gi, while earning bronze at the IBJJF Pan Championship and the IBJJF American Nationals. This run of results across multiple major organizations confirmed his status as a consistent podium-level competitor in the rooster weight division (57.5 kg / 127 lbs) — one of the sport's most technically demanding and fiercely contested weight classes.

Sustained Excellence Across Formats

Lima's progression continued into 2023, when he added silver medals at the IBJJF World Championship and the IBJJF American Nationals, alongside a gold at the IBJJF American Nationals No-Gi. These results underscore his ability to perform at the highest level across both gi and no-gi formats and across multiple competitive seasons.

A Brown Belt Sweep That Foreshadowed What Was to Come

His brown belt campaign, which preceded his black belt promotion, had been equally formidable. Between 2019 and 2020, Lima collected Grand Slam titles in Rio de Janeiro, London, Abu Dhabi, and Los Angeles — a near-comprehensive sweep of the AJP circuit at that belt level that foreshadowed the sustained excellence he would bring to the black belt division.
