Malachi Edmond

Malachi Edmond was born on December 21, 1994, in Silver Spring, Maryland, and grew up in the neighboring Temple Hills area of the greater Washington, D.C. region. His path to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu began in an unlikely place — in front of a television screen. As a young child, Edmond's fascination with the Power Rangers franchise sparked his grandmother's decision to enroll him in a real combat sports school. She found her answer in Lloyd Irvin's Martial Arts Academy, signing Malachi up for the gym's kids program at around the age of five.

His earliest training came through the academy's Thai-Jitsu classes, building a foundational exposure to both striking and grappling. By age seven, his focus had sharpened considerably, and he transitioned to training jiu-jitsu exclusively under coach Donnie Achnick. That early specialization proved to be a defining decision — one that set Edmond on a trajectory toward the summit of the sport.

Edmond's development within Team Lloyd Irvin was defined by an uncommon clarity of purpose. During his time as a blue belt, Malachi made a deliberate commitment to pursue BJJ not as a hobby but as a full-time career and his number one priority. That mindset quickly translated into results, and he established himself as one of the most formidable light-featherweight competitors on the USA East Coast.

Building a Regional and International Record

Throughout his colored belt years, Edmond accumulated an extensive medal record across regional and international IBJJF events. He claimed gold at multiple New York-area opens and the IBJJF Washington DC Summer Open, consistently dominating the regional circuit. His performances at international events were equally compelling — he reached the podium at the IBJJF Pan Championship three times at brown belt and earned a silver medal at the IBJJF World Championship in 2018, one of the most competitive divisions in the sport. Collectively, these results signaled an athlete primed to compete at the highest level.

In June 2019, Lloyd Irvin formally recognized that progression, promoting Malachi Edmond to the rank of black belt — a reward for years of dedicated training and a competition record that spoke for itself.

Edmond's transition to the black belt division did nothing to slow his competitive momentum. Competing in the Peso Pluma division (64 kg / 141.5 lbs) under the Team Lloyd Irvin banner, he wasted little time confirming that his colored belt success was a prelude to elite-level performance on the world stage.

Establishing Elite-Level Consistency

In 2021, Edmond reached the final of the IBJJF World Championships, earning a silver medal at one of the sport's most prestigious events and staking his claim among the very best in his division globally. He followed that result with a gold medal at the 2022 IBJJF European Open, capturing a marquee international title and further cementing his standing in the light-featherweight landscape. In 2023, he reached the final of the IBJJF Pan Championship once more, adding another silver medal to his black belt record and affirming his consistency among the world's top competitors.

Known by the nickname 'Magicman,' Edmond's moniker reflects the dynamic and skillful approach he brings to the mat — an identity forged over two decades of training that began with a child's love of Power Rangers and evolved into a career at the summit of international jiu-jitsu.
