During his infancy, his family relocated to Santa Catarina, the southern Brazilian state where he would grow up, compete, and become one of the region's most recognized figures in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Mello's entry into grappling came at age 8 through judo — a discipline that instilled foundational principles of leverage, balance, and ground control. By age 13, he transitioned to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under the guidance of Paulo Sérgio Santos in Santa Catarina. What started as a guest appearance evolved into a formal job offer, and Mello accepted a position as head coach of an Atos JJ affiliate in Texas — connecting his roots in Santa Catarina to one of the most globally recognized organizations in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

The move represented a significant step for a coach who had built his career in a regional Brazilian market. During his tenure in Texas, Mello continued to compete at IBJJF events, with runner-up finishes at major opens in 2015 and 2016 confirming that his competitive level remained intact despite the demands of a full-time coaching role.

In 2016, Mello returned to Brazil following his mother's illness. After her passing, he chose to remain in Brazil rather than return to Texas, bringing his time at Atos JJ Texas to a close.
